I just tried doing this a couple days ago and at first it was working perfectly. About a day later when I came home from work and turned it on, it took about 3 minutes to load and I got all kinds of errors. Aero Glass was disabled, it told me that it couldn't initialize the "Windows Notification Service service", and all other manner of problems existed. I tried doing a system restore to a configuration that was about a day older, and that seemed to work the rest of the night. When I came home again the next day and started it up, the same problems were back.

I'm ready to do another reformat and reinstall, but I'm curious how everyone else is doing this (successfully). The method I used last time was to just let it install drivers for everything it found, then supplement what it couldn't find with drivers off the HP website. Unfortunately there are about 20 different HDX16 configs on there, so I'm not sure if I got the right one. Are the drivers different among them?

Neon01 - I did the Windows 7 "UPGRADE" instead of a clean install and everything has been working fine but I really have not play around much with it. I have not gotten any strange errors though.(Like your describing).

neon01, was that an upgrade or a clean install? when i first did upgrade, i also randomly experienced the exact same problem: aero turned off, most themes were disabled, desktop reverted back to that fish thingy, etc.. with a clean install, i have yet to see the problem resurface. in fact, it seems to work fine. windows update found me some drivers, and the ones it couldn't find i just installed from my vista SwSetup folder in compatibility mode for vista.

I did a clean install. Trying it again tonight to see if maybe my undervolting was the cause.

hrm, that's strange then. also, i spoke a bit too soon, because i've been getting this random sound problem lately. does anyone else also have sounds randomly shut off? putting the comp to sleep and reopening seems to fix it. it might be associated with the popping noise that comes from the speakers once in a while. i've only seen this twice, so i have yet to make a correlation.

Did another clean install last night and everything seems to be going fine. I think part of the problem might be that there were a few of the vista drivers on the HP webpage that didn't install correctly. Windows recognized this and prompted me to install using compatibility mode. Stupidly I allowed it to go ahead with it. I suspect that may have been the cause. I'll post here if I have any further problems.

On a side note - I get that speaker popping too, but only when the computer is turning on and off. Is that normal?
