I used to be a fan of Avira, but in the latest round of testing, it didnt do so hot.

however, avast did pretty great, its free, and its very light on system resources. it has a very small footprint. Avira is good but it has some issues with detecting the latest crop of virus', i'd recommend avast. it works really great on my laptop.

also, for a firewall, I'd recommend the sphinx free firewall addon for vista's firewall. For wireless protection, I'd recommend using AnchorFree HotspotShield VPN connection software. its free, works awesome and is very secure and trustworthy, and good for securing wifi connections at coffeeshops, and hotels while you are on the road. hope the info helps, enjoy the new laptop!

Most HP notebooks come with a trial version of norton installed (good for 60 days, then you gotta buy it to get updates). Personally, i think of norton as bloatware. it doesnt work any better than avira or avast, costs a lot of money, slows your pc down a lot, and is a pain in the *** to remove.

Now, one person suggested you dump whatever IS pre installed, and go with avira. I used avira for a while and its a great program but lately hasnt done so well in detection and removal tests. i switched to avast, and it is awesome. again, both are free, have a low system resource footprint so they wont turn your machine into a snail, and they work really good. dump whatever comes pre installed and go that route.

a good firewall addon is nice too if you dont have a router firewall. i use both. the sphinx addon for Vista's firewall is neat because it doesnt modify Vista's firewall, it just puts a GUI on outbound and lets you config everything just like say, zone alarm or comodo, would. Sphinx is free, tiny, and works awesome.

I also recommeded the VPN solution for when you are away from home using open wireless networks, as it will give you back a certain degree of privacy and safety.

    hope this helps....

    +1.
I'm also rather curious about those tests you referred to...
Besides the latest Virus bulletin test (as discussed in this thread) where both Avira and Kaspersky catched all the malware and scored 1 false positive each (and got a thumbs down because of it ), I don't know of any test where Avast! outscored Avira AntiVir.
    Enlighten us! :)

:) I have used both Norton and Mcafee and like the Norton User interface better. Despite what alot of people have said in this thread, I run my laptop 24/7 and Norton has never let one of those nasty little boogers crash my digital domain. Most antivirus programs run reasonably well and it realy boils down to what user interface you either like the best, or are used to. :)

Norton Internet Security 2009 is hands down THE BEST program out there.

BitDefender is a joke. If you participated in the beta and went to their forums you know that already.

McAfee is same old same old.

Kaspersky is way too complicated and ultimately not worth the money you pay for it.

FWIW, I've heard from many sources that NIS 2009 is quite good and not nearly as bad as its predecessors. However, I would never pay for it given free alternatives. If I got it for "free", though, I might use it.

    1) McAfee is utter trash.
    2) Norton is a waste of money when....
    3) There are plenty of free programs that work as good or better than the ones you subscribe to.
    4) Viruses don't just 'float' around on the internet waiting to jump on a computer. You pretty much have to download them. If you half way know what you're doing, you should be virus free. Kinda like herpes - you can't get it by shaking hands...

AVG works for ME and its FREE.
