    Dear All,

I've just tried a Samsung Spinpoint 2.5" hard disk (Model: MP0402H) in my NX8220, and low and behold, the high pitch noise coming from it is louder than the Fujitsu that came with the laptop - ARGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHG

Can anyone please advise of a non high-pitch and non-clicking notebook hard disk please, which I can buy. I would be happy with a quiet 40gb 2.5" hard disk, if one actually exists.

Is the seagate momentus (ST94811A) going to be any better?

Any advice would be greatfully appreciated!!!!

    Kind Regards,

    Rob

I have Spinpoint M 80G and it makes no noises, particularly, at higher frequencies. No clicking noise I could hear. There's only one Fujitsu 4200 rpm drive that is as quiet as the 5400 rpm Samsung Spinpoint M. Unusual your system is.

P.S. Seagate clicks loudly, just got rid of one in favor of Samsung.

Sorry to hear that this drive is worse than your original. It's weird how this drive could have been the quietest on those tests done on that site from that link you provided.

There isn't a lot of brands out there that make notebook drives. The only other one I can think of is Western Digital. They just started releasing notebook drives, but don't know the quality.

Below are the only brands I know of that has notebook drives:

    Seagate
    IBM/Hitachi
    Fujitsu
    Western Digital
    Toshiba
    Samsung

The only manufacturer I can think of that is not in the list is Maxtor.

I've used 4 of the 6 listed brands in notebooks (Seagate, IBM/Hitachi, Fujitsu & Toshiba)and I think the Fujistu is the quietest out of the 4. The IBM, Toshiba & Seagate all click like it's writing something to the HDD once in a while while sitting idle.

I have the ST94811A in my old Toshiba. The drive doesn't have a high-pitched noise, but you can hear the reading/writing on the drive. It also does it's occasional read/write clicking noise when idle. When I first got the drive, it hardly made any noise at all, but as time when on, it just louder. I got a 5yr warranty on it, so I'm not too worried about it failing.

Hopefully, my replacement unit will show up with a Fujitsu HDD since I'm not too fond of the IBM/Hitachi's.
