    Hi Adlfv and everybody else.

    I'm also thinking about nc8000. Last few weeks I was reading as much as I could about notebooks and came to the nc8000 as most promising choice for me. There are no reviews so far I guess because it just came out.

    So: 333Mhz ram, 1.6-1.7 Centrino, Radeon 9600 (I want to see FS2004 running on this)... makes a perfect notebook for me so far. :) I just don't know why they didn't put WLAN&Blouetooth by default.

    I was thinking about Dell 8600, but they made a mistake putting nVidia GeForceFX Go 5650 in. Bljah. :)

    I would also want to hear critics of nc8000 before I buy it.

    I think the same way as you...

    I don't understand why they don't put WLAN & Bluetooth, even when the others put it in all notebooks.

    Another thing that i don't understand is that the user's all model's manual, there were only available the 64 Mb card. (it's very strange that in the description of the notebook says that has the ATI 9600 64 Mb or 128Mb, but when i try to customize it, there is any card choice)... that make me go crazy... [} :)]

    I read that the nw800 = nc800 plus best display, best card (FireGL) and 7200RPM drive.

    Another thing that make me feel very angry is that i wrote al email, asking all this little (and *very important*) stuff (with some things more, like accesories and warranties...) and HP DIDN'T ANSWER!!!! [:X]

    I am thinking a lot, if this is the right choice... or i have to wait until Dell release the ATI 9600XT in their inspiron 8600... (i read it will be in December...).

    Thanks for answer me... and sorry again for my little english [ ;)]

    See you guys...

    The lack of online reviews is kind of strange. CNET has just reviewed the NC6000 (thin and light with up to 64mb radeon 9600) and it got an excellent review-they recommended getting 64mb version, but nothing yet on cnet on the nc8000.

    If you go to HP.COM, both the nc6000 and nc8000 are configurable. The NC8000 is configurable with up to 128mb of radeon 9600 mobility pro, 1600X1200, dvd+rw, bluetooth, and 802.11 b/g wlan

    interestingly, dell now offers the inspiron 8600 with 128mb radeon mobility pro turbo (I still do not know what turbo stands for). A preconfigured model with wsxga+ screen, 1.7ghz pentium M, 802.11 g wlan, 80gb hd (probably 4200rpm-they don't specify), 4X dvd-RW can be had for $2197 after rebates and no sales tax (at least for ca). this looks like a great deal. in comparison to the nc8000 specs, you get a wide screen but the unit is slightly heavier and you do not have an extra free bay. The reviews for the 8600 have generally been good, but when you look on user comments in cnet, some people have complained about the build quality and poor customer service.

    abspc.com also offers a couple notebooks with radeon mobility as well. if you are not in a hurry to buy a laptop, the refresh of pentium M-dothan is right around the corner and prices will probably drop even more for standard pentium-M notebooks.

    Personally, I am waiting for IBM to refresh their T41 with 9600 radeon video processors as the t41p with the 128mb fire GL (which is basically 9600 pro with GL drivers) is out of my price range. Hope this helps.

    I haven't found much in the way of reviews, likely because it's billed as a business machine, rather than a personal one. Business reviews lag because most publications cater to individual users. But given the specs and their price, I don't think the value is very good. You could certianly do better with a Fujitsu, or spend the same for better quality with an IBM. Here's HP's page on the product too.

    the inspiron 8600 is unusable if you prefer point-stick to touchpad; the point-stick buttons have an unacceptable amount of travel (i.e. distance button must be depressed to be activated) and no audible/tactile feedback for when adequate distance has been achieved (i.e. "click"). I had to return mine to Dell because I just could not get past this issue.

    I am now using an HP Nc8000. It seems OK so far in terms of build quality and the point-stick issue has been resolved. My only reservations about the unit at this time are price (it was $3k) and the version of the ATI Mobility Radeon (non-turbo, which means memory clock ~202 vs. ~243). Benchmark results for the inspirons on www.futuremark.com are running a bit higher than the ones I've posted on my HP (mileage will vary though depending on application since this is synthetic benchmark).

    Other impressions:

    -Build quality is better than Dell (not as creaky, materials seem "more expensive", at least visually and aurally).
    -More attractive (black/silver vs. grey w/ bright blue)
    -Screen at 1400x1050 is more readable than dell at 1600x1200 (yes i know 1600x1200 is insane for 15.4"... im learning these things through trial and error :)...)
    -Speakers on Dell sounded better
    -HP is much lighter
    -HP is smaller and fits in laptop bag more easily (dell -barely- fit)
    -HP has a handy SD card reader (dont recall if Dell did or not)

    Just had a few questions?

    1. What is the maximum resolution on your screen?

    2. What type of battery life are you getting?

    3. How is the screen?

    4. What are the functions of the trackpad?

    5. Do you use the optical drive or have the weight saver?

    6. How does the ATI 9600 128mb card perform?

    7. Aside from price, are you satisfied with the purchase?

    Thank You

    1. What is the maximum resolution on your screen?
    1400x1050

    2. What type of battery life are you getting?
    excellent, over 3 hours at full speed using CD etc. more if I go in "power conservation mode".
    3. How is the screen?
    The screen is excellent except my unit shipped w/ a visual defect that Im trying to get HP to address.

    4. What are the functions of the trackpad?
    I dont use trackpad, so im not sure.
    5. Do you use the optical drive or have the weight saver?
    I use optical drive
    6. How does the ATI 9600 128mb card perform?
    pretty well, no real complaints. It is adequate for running current generation 3d accelerated games.
    7. Aside from price, are you satisfied with the purchase?
    Yes, except for the screeen defect (and a long fulfillment time on my order) I think the laptop is a solid product.

    I just received my NC8000 last week. It is replacing a much beloved Thinkpad A22m. I would have purchased another Thinkpad, but I was unable to configure it the way that I wanted.

    Stats:

    1.6 GHz processor
    60 GB Hard drive
    512MB RAM
    1400 x 1050 15" display
    Windows XP Home

    I was pleasantly suprised by the quality of the keyboard and display. The keys have a nice feel to them (although this is subjective). The keys are large and well placed (actually a slight improvement over a couple of strange placements on the my old Thinkpad). The display is bright and easy to read, even at 1400 x 1050.

    The performance is all that I expected that it would be. Our simulation models run 2.5x faster than on the old Thinkpad (1 GHz Pentium III). We are getting into 3D simulation and the prototype animation is working flawlessly.

    Oddly enough the computer is labeled as an NC6000 and not all of the seams in the plastic fit togehter smoothly, so it appears that the overall quality (at least of this computer) is not up to ThinkPad standards (IMHO).

    The computer did not come with any documentation. Perhaps it did not need any because it was quite easy to set up. But if you were not familiar with what all of the laptop specific symbols meant, that could be a source of frustration.

    I hope this helps anyone considering this computer.

    I think that nobody would argue the high quality of the IBM thinkpads. THey are for sure the masters of that domain. IT's strange taht you didn't get any documentation with it. I just received my zd7000 and it came with a short picture guide on how to get started for the first time and then had a manual that explained all the buttons, features, and introduced to the included software. I'm glad to hear its working out for you though. Have fun with it.

    Hi everybody,

    I bought my NC8000 at ebay (Germany) and got it for
    2000 EURO which is ~2500 USD.

    I love it!!!

    I also had the same problems that I could only find
    one (!) review for this great notebook in the whole
    internet.

    My previous notebook was a Dell Inspiron 8200 which
    basically was fine except for the following issues:

    * Cooling fans running all the time even with special
    controling software
    * Display resolution too high (!) 1600x1200 results
    in >130dpi which was bad for my eyes :-(
    Note: The quality of this display is the best I
    have ever seen!
    * Bad keyboard

    So what about the HP NC8000:

    Pros:
    ====

    * Great excellent keyboard actually I like it even
    more than an "external" one
    * Good display (though it cannot beat Dell's UXGA)
    with better dpi value (116) for my eyes
    * Decent hard drive 5400rpm but a bit noisy
    * Bluetooth (!) + 54MBit WLAN!!!
    * Extendable up to 2GB RAM - I am using 1.5GB right now

    Cons:
    ====

    * Really bad touchstick (I do not use it so I
    don't really care about it)
    * Place where HD resides warms up a bit after
    using the notebook a while
    * Really bad hibernation performance!!!

    The last point really pisses me off. Whereas I
    liked hibernation a lot on my old Dell notebook
    I am using it rarely on the HP. It takes longer
    to use the hibernation than restarting the
    notebook. So if it's not absolutely necessary
    I don't use it at all.

    If anyone could shed some light on this problem
    I would highly appreciate it!

    If anybody needs some additional details please
    let me know.

    Marc

    Congradulations on your new laptop. I hope that I start seeing some new reviews over the internet (hint hint).

    An update on my experience with my NC8000.

    The right 1" of my screen died... just went blank last month. HP replaced it without a fuss. Interestingly enough, the new display now says it is an NW8000 so they still have the model number wrong.

    I think my next comptuer will be a Thinkpad
