i picked up an unloved fleabag G4-1117dx I'm refurbing, has no mem. need to buy - can someone give me a couple of specific part numbers to look for? haven't found the exact HP spec that details the memory timings etc. it can take pc3-12800, maybe faster, but you know how it goes. don't want to get incompatible and not know what's up

    thank you :hi2:

The HP Maintenance & Service Guide (Page 26, Part 21) says two slots, 8GB max, DDR3, 10600, 1333. Part numbers are there also. That said, the Crucial Memory Finder shows either DDR3, 12800, 1600 or DDR3, 14900, 1866.
I’d go with the Crucial numbers.

yes, i had seen crucials and kingston's recos. its usually things other than the topline specs that cause a non-boot situation however, so its good to start with a known working part, pull the full specs [density, layout, timings, even voltage tolerances] and try to match.
that said, my exp has been that the later amd chipsets are more tolerant than some of the intel

I guess it just depends on what the goals are for your “unloved Fleabag G4” LOL. Given that Crucial doesn’t even list a DDR3 1333 part however and liberally warrants their offerings, I’d be tempted to make the 500+ MHz jump to a 1866 part. That’s a fairly significant pop and perhaps in some instances could even be noticeable. Just depends on your goals, budget, and the condition of the fleabag…. too funny.

'tis a moniker of affection :)
I actually like this model - I had worked on one in the past, upgrading it for a paying customer, with SSD and adequate ram it was pretty spry, and can be upgraded to a llano a8.
the size also - this was a day when makers weren't too concerned with making things smaller but for a 14 it is relatively narrow and easy to one-hand. dirt cheap - forlorn, needed bathing and de-licing but will do well with one of my 'lab' small SSD's
