I just bought this laptop from Costco and I have heard that there are some issues with the blu ray player. I haven't bought a PC in five years, so I am trying to understand as much as I can about it.

I can't comment on the specific issues, but you made a wise decision buying it from Costco. HP refurbs typically have only a 90-day warranty, but yours gets a full 1-year warranty. Costco also accepts returns for up to 90 days if you do discover any problems!

I buy everything from Costco that I can. Everytime I shop around and buy something online for a cheaper price, I regret not buying it from Costco because of their return policy.

Hopefully it gets here in the next few days. I am upgrading from an AMD 3400+ and an X800XL so I am expecting a lot of speed!

does the 9600M GT use the GDDR3 or the slower DDR2 memory in this model?

It's the slower DDR2 version of the 9600M GT...but still a VERY solid mid-range GPU!

It scores just over 4400 on 3DMark06. For comparison, Intel's integrated 4500MHD averages about 950 and the entry level nVIDIA 9200M GS scores around 1800 on 3DMark06.

I'd say start with the ones already installed from HP. Download a trial version of 3DMark06 or 3DMarkVantage from FutureMark- LINK. Then run the benchmark test with driver already installed. After that, download the one from nVIDIA and run the same test again. Stick with the one that gives you the best performance.
