What do you like the most about this model?

I ordered mine yesterday. Hopefully it arrives this week. I will use it with Windows XP/Linux/FreeBSD, and tell you how it performs, and what I like/dislike.

I don't think many people have the 8710p, most have the 8510p. You may want to check out the reviews some people have written about the 8710p.

I own the 8710w and so far absolutely happy with it. The performance is top notch! It's silent as death and very powerful at the same time!

i have the same model i believe your interested in, 2.2ghz, 4gb, wsxga+, bluray, xp pro, rm299ut, 8 cell ext battery, coolermaster infinate notebook cooler which i highly recommend it, the combination of cooler and ext battery puts the laptop at a extremely comfortable angle, the 8710p itself is awesome i love it, i had a 8510p before which had the graphic driver problems so i exchanged it for the 8710p and i could't be happier, the glossy anti-reflective wide viewiing angle screen is awesome i have no problems with the screen whatsoever, the resolution is not a problem to read, the keyboard feels great n the keystrokes are quiet, i have no issues with the touchpad it works perfectly for me, hdd is quiet although i am going to swap it out for a hitachi 200g 7200, the fan is usually quiet, the laptop stays cool, the only real issue's i've noticed is when i tried playing a bluray movie months ago the playback would hiccup but i think it's a driver issue and there is a driver fix for it not a real issue right now for me, the other issue i noticed is with the wireless it connects at wi-g speeds and not wi-n as it has a wi-n card and i have a wi-n router im sure theres a way to solve it but it works fine for me now . the build quality is superb imo, once again i could not be happier with it, i definately recommend it, i've owned it for little over 2 months and have'nt had any problems other than the little ones above that im sure are easy fixes, imo the coolermaster is a must have for it, i also have a swiss gear pegasus backpack which works perfect for me i also recommend it.

Received my 8710p today. What a fantastic screen.
Horizontal viewing angles are very good. Vertical are ok too.
Better than my MacBook Pro 15.4 inch, 1 year old.
Also like the mouse buttons. I have to get used to the keyboard yet.
System stays pretty cool too. After saving Vista Business to DVD, I'll install Win XP now. Tomorrow UNIX. I'll send my experience. -
I love mine. I just did a fresh install with VB32 & applied SP1 and its superb. This is the best computer I have ever had. The only thing that is not that great on it is the trackpoint since I consider the one on the lenovo better, but thats about it. Oh, and I love watching Blu-Ray on it!

After 1 week I'm still very happy with the 8710p. I saved the Vista-B software, and installed XP and Fedora 8 Linux. For Linux I installed the Nvidia driver, and it works perfectly. Fedora works very well with this machine, giving me 3+ hours of battery life, and XP 4+ hours.
Wireless works (for linux) out of the box.
The pointing stick doesn't work great for me either, but that' not a big deal.
HP also had a nice promotional offer in February here in the Netherlands:
I get an ipaq-314 for free with this system, not bad.
chinch123, have you bought one yet? I highly recommend it, exept for frequent travel. -
I just got my 8710P today, and overall I'm pretty pleased with it. One minor annoyance I do have though, is that I can only hold 3 keys down simultaneously. Not great for gaming.

I've owned a 8710p for about 4 months now. The model is w. 2.2Ghz C2D, WSXGA+ matte screen, 4Gb RAM, Vista Business x64.
In general I'm quite pleased with this model. The ergonomics is very good. The palm rest has a very pleasant texture that enables your wrists to move over the surface without to much friction.
I've had no problem with stability with Vista x64. Performance is more than adequate for office use. For games it's perhaps a mid range machine today. It can play Crysis at mid settings at a playable framerate. Most other games run well on this machine. If you are total gamer you should perhaps go for a machine with a better card like Nvidia 8800 or 9800. If you want this particular model but with better graphics you got Quadro FX3600M but expect to pay for it. You're probably much better off with a consumer 8800GT for a fraction of the price.
The screen is ok. It has noticable light bleed in the bottom of the screen when the screen is black. This doesn't bother me much though. The colors are vibrant enough and the screen feels pleasant to look at. There is no hint of grainyness with this screen which usually annoy me very much especially when you sit with a word processing program with text on a white background. I do recommend you to choose the matte screen over the glossy screen, this however a personal preference. My previous computer (nx9420) had a glossy screen where I reflections sometimes were noticable. Compared to nx9420, the screen of the 8710p is much brighter. The response time feels worse than nx9420 but not really a problem. The viewing angle compared to nx9420 is much better. Over all the screen is good.
The build quality is basically the best there is in the laptop market and the main reason I keep buying this model. -
Just a quick question. I'm curious to know where your 8710p/w's are assembled. Most units I've seen are made by Compal. Are there any being made by Inventec, Tech Front, Hong Hai Precision/Hong Fu Jin (FoxConn) or HP (this means HP's own assembly facility)? These are the only ODMs I know that assemble HP's business laptops. They used to be exclusive to Inventec, but it seems HP has split its contract to more ODMs lately.
Are you happy with your 8710p?
