That all I really want to say, I hate this POS with a passion. Months before my college started, I asked my dad specifically to get me a DV1000 from Samsclub. But no, for some reason just to annoy me or something, he gets me a DV4000 from Costco!

I just hate this notebook so much! Its bulky, ugly, and gets dirty very easily. I'm not kidding, this happens all the time, I close the notebook for the night and when I open the lid the next morning, I ALWAYS find crumbs on the keyboard, just unbeleiveable!!! The stickers just automatically peeled off a bit later and two months later, the entire keyboard, touchpad and parts of the armsrest are all glossy and shiny looking.

My last notebook was a 10.6" Fujitsu Lifebook P5020D so naturally, this stupid thing is a beast. If I'm going to get a notebook this big, it should at least be able to play games, but no, its stuck with a cruddy GMA 900 graphics and a slow hard drive. Its useless, useless I tell you!

In fact, all I do with it is surf the internet and type up documents, he should have just gotten me a desktop even that could play games. I never even take it out of my apartment, its just stuck there all the time, such a freaking waste of a notebook. Or I could have at least gotten a cheaper smaller notebook. I don't need an 80 gig hard drive or 1 gig of ram. I could even go with a Celeron.

This stupid notebook is really my only posession, so I wanted it to be good, perfect for me, but my dad had to get me something I didn't want! I spent a lot of time researching the DV1000 and really liked it.
The moment I'm able to get a new notebook, I am going to literally crush this pile of garbage into a million peices!!! ARRRRGGGGHHH!!!! I am so angry at my DAD!!!!
I can't wait until I don't have to use it anymore!!!!

I used to respect HP a lot but I really feel that my next notebook will not be an HP.

While I do understand that you are angry, I do not feel you should be angry at your dad. People just don't realise how much our parents give to us. Besides, you would have been stuck with GMA900 in the DV1000 anyway. It's too bad you didn't get the DV4000 with the X700. Seriously though, you should be happy that your parents got you a laptop in the first place.

Yup, I'd agree with that. When I needed a laptop for college, I had to get a loan to pay for it.. Not only that, but my dad didn't pay for much of my college either.. In addition to that, I don't even have a car anymore so I have to ride the bus.. Well, actually 2 busses. One bus to go from the village to the city, and another bus to go from the City to the college..

So I'm $15,000 in debt, with Interest on it piling on every month. When I graduate, all the interest will capitalize, and the amount of the loan will increase. Which means the rate at which I owe more money will increase... I haven't even graduated yet.. I still have another semester or two to go!!
I have a pretty darn nice laptop, but only to do schoolwork on. It's actually about the same size as the dv4000.

And I have to ride the bus to school everyday...So I carry my laptop in my HP backpack... Not only that... I also have to carry this HUGE art portfolio on Thursdays.. I'm a computer science major, and I have to take Art!! And lug this crazy portfolio around with me.. It weighs about 35 pounds with all the paints, drawing board, and several very large books of matted paper for painting on. Not only that, but I really can't ride the bus home.. I have to catch the 5:00 bus out of the college, and then catch the 5:40 bus out of the city, and then I have to walk about 4 or 5 blocks to make it home.. The problem though is that I can't do that because I have a late night class and an early morning class. So I'm pretty much stuck at the school from about 8:00 AM until my dad or mom comes to pick me up at around 10:00 PM!! I don't really care though.. I have my laptop afterall...

Life isn't easy.. Complaining about it isn't going to make it any better. Grow up.

You really need to have a talk with your dad. If you didn't like what he bought, you have 2 options... talk to him and ask him to return it and buy you the dv1000. Or accept what he gave you, since he's the one who paid for it. you should be grateful that he bought you one. A lot of people can't afford to buy even a desktop, much less a laptop.

Crumbs do not magically appear on notebooks. So if you don't eat near your laptop, someone is.

I bought a 2 HP laptops & 3 Compaq laptops(for family members).. and we have no problem with shiny keyboards. You probably have sweaty hands or oily skin... or could it be oils from foods, maybe chips?

You don't respect HP, but you really like the Dv1000. hmmmm. Oh! Dv1000 also comes with GMA900.
the V2000Z maybe a little better for you since it's GPU is a little better... but the warm palmrest may make your hands more sweaty or oily.

Instead of crushing the laptop to pieces, have you thought of donating it to non-profit orgs or schools?

I have no problem with the GMA900 graphics at all. But I wouldn't accept it in a 15.4" notebook, a notebook that large should at least have a dedicated GPU, even a Radeon X300, just something dedicated.
My dad had called me and asked me what notebook I'd like and I specifically told him to go to our local Sams Club and buy a DV1000 there. I just wonder why he didn't listen.

The circumstances under which your father bought that particular computer weren't mentioned, except to say, in passing, that he may have only intended to annoy you. No doubt, that is not the case.

I have a son who reacted to his first car (servicable, but old and ugly to his eye), a gift from me, as you have described as your own reaction to your dad's gift. My boy did not receive the newer, nicer car I had planned to purchase for him when he became a more accomplished driver.

Anger and disappointment are not the proper emotions to display upon receiving a gift, IMHO. To date, my own son does not even know that he would have received a new Civic after a year or so, had he shown a bit of appreciation for what he did receive.

Okay, I think I should put my 2 cents.

First let me clarify, my comments are not to offend anyone, but known facts to me.

Typical Indian kids expect more/all from their parent. They take it granted. That is the typical indians culture. I know many parents from my village who sold their houses, lands to educate their kids, to send to better schools, and current generation is no better, actually being more pampered than even my generation.

Now, about actual Laptop. One thing many people do not realize is, how much it feels heavy with little increase in weight of the laptop. even 0.5 pound makes it feel lot heavier.

Secondly, I think your dad has best intensions and thought he is buying the best for you with 15.4" screen, though little expensive, he must have thought he is buying the best one for you.( We know it is no cheaper than DV1000).

About the shiny Keyboard, in my view I do not think, it is that bad. (has gone thru several lappies and few dells kb shiny in few months).

If I were you, I would to talk to/convince dad and return it if possible, else put it on sale for some loss and buy a notebook of your liking adding couple more hundred dollars from your pocket money.

It is not good stay with the same laptop if it keeps you irritating( as you sit infront of it for 8-10 hrs a day), not good for mood and health.

Sometimes, if you get something you kept hating everyday, you better get rid of it.( It happend with my second car, bought a brand new Honda Accord, but was never happy with that for couple of years and then finally got rid of it. I felt much better after that, do not need to drive it everyday!!).

Well, I mean, I can fully understand what some of you are saying by that I should be appreciative that I got it free as a gift, but I am rather annoyed that he called me up to ask me which one I specifically wanted and then just blatantly ignores my request. He should not have called me then to ask me in the first place if he was not even going to listen to me.

I wouldn't say I'm greedy at all. My dad gave me his old car last year and I'm very appreciative of that. Not the best car in the world, a bit beat up and such, but its for free and I'm not complaining. My dad is actually pretty stingy and I can't remember the last time he's ever gotten me anything. So when he gave me a choice in picking my notebook and I wanted the perfect one for me fitting his budget and then he just ignores my request, so thats why I'm angry at him I suppose.
I really, really do not want to keep this POS for 1.5 more years, thats far too long for me, especially when its so big. Like I said, I came before from an ultraportable with a 10.6" screen, so this thing is just a beast I don't even want to take around. I don't even take it around with me anywhere, so whats the point of getting a notebook then? Should have just gotten a gaming desktop for the same price.
I need to ask him to sell it and get me a cheaper notebook with a Celeron, 512 megs of ram, 60 gig hard drive, etc and then quickly replace that after a year or so with a Merom notebook or something like that.

Woah...no offense there kid but you sound like a huge brat.

I can't believe you even wasted your time by ranting like this over a luxury item (a laptop IS a luxury IMO). Is a notebook with peeling stickers, crumbs, and glossy keys REALLY a big deal? Not really...

When you say stuff like "...he called me up to ask me which one I specifically wanted and then just blatantly ignores my request. He should not have called me then to ask me in the first place if he was not even going to listen to me", it makes you sound like a stupid 5 year old.

You want a better notebook? Don't tell your dad to sell it for you and whatnot...grow up, get a job and EARN the money yourself. No one said your parents had to buy you a computer anyways, let alone a laptop.

Just suck it up and make the best of the situation...

I'm usually not one to pile on, and I can understand your frustration not getting what you "thought" you wanted, but, I'll take anything free somebody has to offer me with a smile on my face and warmth in my heart, since regular people get very little in this world that way.

Now that said, yeah, a GMA 900 is kinda sucky. LOL

It doesnt matter if he didnt get you the one you didnt want it. he thought a bigger one would be better. but take it from me which my parents and me live in what USA consider poverty, that if someone gives you something you at least be happy. u think not? well i appreciate whatever they give me even if it has some ugly to it like a old car instead of a new one. again at least you know your dad, i dont even know where mine is. my mom is the only one that works and she gets paid $7\hr and at least makes 13000-14000 a year. as of right now i have almost everything ive wanted except a car. yea i have a computer, its not top of the line but i have one and its better than nothing. i might not live in a house or things like that, you need to appreciate money and all the things. heh im 18 and i already know the value of things and even money. you get what you get, maybe your not used to it but i am. im in the first in the whole family to even get to own a comp or EVEN a laptop. so yea those were my 2 cents.

Notebooks (the specific, right notebook) mean a lot to all of us at this forum. I wouldn't be sitting here typing at 1 am if they didn't.

You clearly are not happy with this notebook, so I suggest you find some way of trading it with someone else, or selling it, or such, and get one you are happy with. :)

The point is that you love your father, and you shouldn't let a mere machine destroy your relationship with him.

My god...why did you ask your dad in the first place then? Why didnt you go with him and buy it. DV4000 in my view is one of the best laptops with its X700 dedicated video card.

I would love to buy that notebook but turns out the Sony im getting beats it.

See if you can return it and get a new one or else just sell it on ebay after your dad's permission. Or give him the notebook and get yourself a new one!

Overall said any laptop can come and go...your dad on the other hand cannot.

OK people, I think he gets the point. Perhaps you should try saving up for your on laptop. It's fun and rewarding. I'm only in eighth grade, I've been saving all my lunch money, birthday money, and report card money ever since September. I'm pretty close to my DV8000z now ($1104/$1410.46), it really piles on. It really taught me some cool things, and led me to find these forums. And it teaches to take care of your investment. Once I realized I was going to spend 1.5K on a thing that could break in one drop, I decided to get a case. Plus, you can brag that you saved up for it yourself, even though your dad got one for you.

    Rahul,

IMO, I don't recommend the M55. I have one (same spec as Costco online's ad, except 100GB HD) and hate the Intel Wireless card badly. The signal strength received dropped often, and many times I couldn't have my laptop connected due to the poor signal reception. Now, I don't even touch this laptop anymore. The P-M processor is powerful, but the graphics and wireless functionality are not. My current Toshiba lappy is equipped with 1.6 Celeron-M, ATI 200m, and Atheros Wi-Fi. I got it cheap from a BB a few weeks ago, and I'm happy with it. :D

Crumbs on keyboard...thats form you/others eating or brining crap around your keyboard. Shiny keys is from not washing your hands before you use your keyboard, same with touchpad. Dont be dirty....and respect what your father got you. Sorry had to comment.

Yeah, I agree with the PMs I've recieved, this has gone on long enough. While you may think that Rahul is being immature about this, it is hardly necessary to point it out again and again. I think this topic is settled, especially seeing as things appear to be working out for Rahul, so I'll just lock this up and we can all move on and be happy. OK? :)
