I'm gonna buy a new laptop powered by AMD processor. That laptop mainly used for office applications, web surfing, and
some light entertainment such as watching DVD,listening music. I'm big fan of AMD processorsince my desktop used snappy
Venice 3000+, I'd like to use AMD Inside in the notebook as well. Yeah, for mobile, 64-bit isn't my attention,so Mobile Sempron
3000+/3300+ would suffice all of my needs. IMO, COmpaq Presario v2000 series(v2406AP):
-Mobile Sempron 3000+/3300+(1.8GHz / 2.0GHz)
-ATi X200 chipset
-512 DDR 333
-14" Wide BrightView
-40GB(4200?)
-Combo drive
-Broadcom 802.11 b/g
would suit to my tight budget..![]()
Here's my questions:
1. Does Mobile Sempron support Cool'n'Quiet feature, like SpeedStep Tech. in Pentium M family?
I know that Celeron M doesn't support automatic FID & VID since Intel locked SpeedStep unit in Celeron-M chips. But
I have no idea whether or not AMD applies it in Mobile Sempron.
2. How about Mobile Sempron 3000+ performance compared to that of Celeron M 360/370 since Sempron only has 128KB L2
cache vs 1MB in Celeron M? Most people in my country, indonesia, said that Celeron-M would easily outperform Sempron
because of its greater cache. IMO it's not true since Sempron should have integrated memory controller albeit has smaller cache.
Any help would be greatly appreciated :hp:

The performance of these two budget lines of processors are about the same. If you're getting a budget processor, there shouldn't be much difference between a Celeron and Sempron. If the notebook has the features you want, don't let one processor stop you over the other!
-
Yes, the mobile Sempron does have all of the power saving features found in the Turion. The only thing the Sempron does not have is the 64 bit capability and the extra cache.
You are right, the cache comes into effect only if you are comparing cpu's based on identical architecture. The Sempron and the Celeron M are based on very different architectures. The way they use the cache also varies. The Sempron wih its on die memory controller can access the memory at a faster rate than the Celeron can. So the extra cache is needed by the Celeron M(1MB) to give around the same performance as the Sempron(128/256K). -
heres also a good question - does the Sempron run cooler than the Turion?
-
Well, given that it has less cache and has a TDP of 25W, it should run bit cooler, but in reality it is very negligible. A Turion and Sempron with the same cooling system would run at around the same temperature.

For ones who wanna know about differences architecture between both processor see this link:

Perhaps I'd go for Sempron instead of CeleronM
Ask Compaq Presario w/Sempron performance
