I have just flashed my BIOS with the latest version that HP has released (L2000, Turion ML 34). Among other small things, the new BIOS adds "improved fan control." Now the fan kicks off at 54*C; with my previous BIOS, it started at 58*C.
A year ago, with the first few BIOS releases, the fan used to start at 55*C...
Frankly, I have no idea why HP makes those changes in the fan control as the difference is minimal as far as noise, heat and battery life are concerned. Ideas?
I wonder what is the situation with the newer CPUs: Turion X2 and Core (2) Duo. At what temperature does your fan start? Has HP changed this temperature through a BIOS update?
Just thought this could be interesting.

My temp right now is 48C and my fan is on at a low speed. It seems to be on almost all the time, but it's so quiet I literally have to put my ear right next to it to hear it.
Maybe it's too much to ask, but I would personally really like to see computer manufacturers find a way to make laptops truly usable on laps. I often use mine on my lap, and I'm careful about how I place the air intakes so as not to overheat it. But it would be great if I didn't have to worry about that... eh, I guess that's pretty unlikely. -
Hm, I thought the small 14'' laptops did not have constantly spinning fans. Do you know when the fan will switch to a higher speed? Probably 55?
As to laptops for the lap, Apple make fanless notebooks. I haven't seen one but sounds interesting (and risky)
At what temp does your fan start?
