Ordered the base dv4z and installed vista fresh as soon as i got it and loaded all the drivers from hp's support site. everything is working beautifully however today i was listening to some mp3s for a while and noticed some very subtle crackling. First I thought it was the mp3 file but no i noticed it in all the files. then i thought it might be the laptop speakers so i plugged in headphones and the crackling is even more noticeable with headphones. then i tried a different player... same crackling.

so i do some research on google and notice that people in the dell forums have been having this issue and it has something to do with dpc latency

i go and get the little program to check latency from here

well... it appears that the forums wont let me post a link until i've posted 15 times or more but if you do a google search for dpc latency it brings up the page with the program as the first website

and i do have latency issues. after checking through my device manager for the offending device, i find that its the broadcom wireless. If i turn my wireless off, the latency problems go away and the crackling goes away.

I was wondering if anyone else had these problems and if you could check the latency on your computers to see if you're having the same issues. if not, what version of the sound and wireless drivers are you guys running

i tried to find some newer broadcom wireless drivers but it appears that the ones on the hp website are the newest ones out there.

    thanks

You just need to disable a setting in the advanced wireless settings. The answer is in the Dell forum somewhere. I will try find it for you.

I had the same problem as the OP.

I searched and found this possible solution:

The fix seems to work. I no longer have a problem with the audio. This problem seems quite widespread.

well, i saw that solution but for me, it wasn't that simple because i have a b/g wifi card, not a a/b/g wifi card. so there is no a band for me to disable.

i have however found a solution!

i found newer drivers at laptopvideo2go and they worked like a charm!

i would post the link but again, they wont let me do it until i have posted 15 times...
