I wanted to know if it was necessary to unload the CMOS battery i.e. reset the BIOS settings when upgrading a CPU?

I have an HP dv9705ef w/ an Athlon TK-57 (1.9 GHz, L2 512 KB) and wanted to put in a Turion TL-64 (2.2 GHz, L2 1 MB) instead but things didn't work out. Once installed, the system would start for a couple seconds then restart the same way indefinitely-- no screen display, no beep. Yet, according to the service manual, this is a valid upgrade. The only thing I forwent doing, out of laziness really, was to take the CMOS battery away. Could this be the reason?

Was it on the latest BIOS to start with?
Yes the CMOS battery should be under the center cover where the RAM is. Is on my DV9774.

No, it was on the second-to-last BIOS, from March 2009; the latest is dated from April 2010. But I think it is safe to assume that support for the TL-64 was added by 2009.. Regarding the CPU, I bought it on eBay, used but it looks in pristine condition.

I will make a new try next week but since it's quite a lengthy/tedious process, I would have liked it to know if it was worth it.

No, but this morning I did it for sure lol.. I made another bid after all, unfortunately the outcome the same :( Now, I can only guess the CPU is faulty. I sent a message to the seller, hoping he will offer to send me another.

Thank you for trying to help :)

    Sorry about that.

You know whats funny, and probably not illegal, but the CPU in the ebay picture, and the details in the sale both have different "model" CPU part # as the one you took a photo of. I mean if they argue you can at least say they sent the wrong one!
    They are identicle cpu's though.

Hey you're right, I hadn't noticed! Fortunately, the seller offered to send me a replace CPU without asking any questions-- lucky me :) This far, I've never had one speck of trouble with Asian sellers, always kind and understanding.

On my first attempt, I had also put a thick copper shim atop the GPU. Surprisingly, there was nothing between it and the heatsink, no wonder idle temperature was topping 70 °C! Well, it looks like my little "surgery" proved useful, cause I have lost a good 10 °C since then :)
