    Backlight Bleeding

    I just got a 8730w (non-dreamcolor) and experience serious backlight bleeding. It's kind of irritating because it's obvious. Brightness set at around half only.

    Does HP warranty cover this?

    No, the warranty won't cover it. Because all LCD displays do it. This is why i still keep a big CRT as the display of my main computer, but on a laptop you just have to live with it. At least till they start offering OLED. ;)

    FYI, mine has significant bleeding above 30% brightness (but more than 50% is unbearably bright indoors anyway), and less than 100% vertical viewing angle. No matter how i look at either the top or bottom is going to look bad. My old Toshiba was pretty much the same, plus a heapload of dust INSIDE the screen, so i'm happier with this HP. Sometimes backlight bleeding can even be a good thing, since you can turn the brightness lower than you would usually do. ;)

    What are you talking about? Not all LCD screens have backlight bleeding.

    If you're fine having a screen exhibiting a defect (a common one, but still a defect), that's OK. But don't mislead other members into thinking it is normal or by design. My Precision M4400 has no backlight bleeding, and the OP shouldn't tolerate serious backlight bleeding on his 8730w.

    Here's a picture of a non-Dreamcolor 8730w (this one is the WSXGA+), and it has no backlight bleeding:

    pchmj: ask for a screen replacement. If the bleeding is bad enough, HP should have no problem replacing your screen.

    How exactly does backlight bleeding help you "turn the brightness lower"? Since when is a known screen defect a good thing?

    My current desktop Dell 2007W does not have backlight bleeding as well, using IPS panel.

    Since there are non-dreamcolor display that does not have this problem, I'll send it back to hp then. The problem is bad enough at least to me, it's too obvious.
