    It shouldnt be too much. The first thing would be to figure what is broken inside the LCD, the inverter or the backlight itself. Both of these parts should be pretty cheap, the only thing you will have to worry about would be to find the right part for your system. The parts themselves should be less than $30 depending on where you buy.

    Those VDUs are know to go bad, its a very likely that is your problem... In some cases you can tell its the VDU by pressing the lid switch a couple times, if the light flickers then thats certainly your VDU.

    P.S.
    VDU = backlight Inverter.

    You can usually tell if it is the backlight by shining a flashlight on the screen. If the image is there when on it will light up faintly, if not it is most likely the inverter. I don't know about HP, but my dell had a backlight die. The backlight often needs to be soldered on. You can buy a panel with backlight online. I bought my panel on ebay for $280 or so with inverter and replaced it myself. It was expensive, but since I bought my laptop with american express they extended the warranty by 1 year and covered the cost. good luck

    It is possible that the inverter could not be pulsing the brightness strong enough that the backlight will not light. Was the failure quick? For mine the screen had a slower warm up pinkish tone. First question is are you comfortable soldering a backlight onto an inverter? If you are then you can get a backlight and try it. If it doesn't work, then get the inverter. Both parts are realitively inexpensive. I chose the simple route of replacing the lcd panel that included the backlight integrated into the panel and an inverter. The price for the panel with an inverter was the same as the price without. The panel was brand new. Worked great and the panel was acutally better than the original one. With the image there it is not video card or motherboard issues.

    Pinkish tone means bad backlight, otherwise you should assume it's the inverter. See the laptoprepair101 links I posted above.
