My mom has a Compaq 2200 from about 4-5 years ago. When she goes to adjust the angle of the screen, the screen will go dark. You can barely make out what is on the screen if you look at slight angles. Rebooting the laptop fixes the problem at least temporarily.

Is this a backlight issue? As far as I know, once it goes out, its out. But I'm not that familiar with it. Or would it more likely be just a connection glitch in the hinge?

I strongly suspect that the inverter (basically a power converter for the backlights) is failing. You can purchase the part on eBay.

It could also be that the video cable is loose, or that the backlights themselves are failing.

It may be the inverter board or the wiring. You can go to HP's website and download the manual to partially strip it and check both. Since you did not put the exact model I took a guess. Check that link to a pdf manual for the Presario 2200. They sell the invereter boards on ebay, and there is a sale using Live.com and ebay to get 30% cashback on certain purchases. Check the thread on it in these forums.

Well, since your mother tilts the screen and the problem occurs, it may just be a loose power cable. Take off the LCD bezel by unscrewing all of the screws under the small rubber pads and check the connection on the small circuit board hanging out under the LCD panel.
