I bought a Compaq 2585US Laptop 4 to 5 years ago at Best Buy,
After owning it a year the DC jack became damaged and was returned to Best Buy for warranty repair.
Best Buy shipped it to their authorized service center for the repair.

Last month from 3 to 4 years of use the DC Jack started to loosen.

I took it to a local shop for repair, for $110 diagnostic fee, when they opened it up they found shoddy soldering work, possible MoB0 damage and scotch tape.

The shop said they have seen Techs just repair it enough to get it out of the warranty period.

So other than spending $410 on a Mobo, or buying a new laptop.
do i have any recourse on getting them to fix it?

I dont expect to get free repairs, however I do expect the job to be done correctly the first time

HP has some type of program that has a LARGE number of laptops under a warranty extension for similar problems. I'm not sure what the website is, but your laptop may be on the list and entitled to a free repair.

As for the shoddy work, if you can get a statement from the repair shop you used you MIGHT be able to take HP to the Better Business Bureau. The BBB might not be able to do anything, or the case may be dismissed outright, but its really your only shot on a laptop that is so far out of warranty.

I'd advice you to buy another notebook before putting $400 into your current one.

I agree....i think its time to buy a new laptop...with a new laptop ranging from 600-800 dollars you're already halfway or more to the cost of a new one
