I am totally pi$$sed!! One month after my warranty expires, my 12 cell dv5t battery stops dead in its tracks. No warning, no nothing! (Was working fine up until it died, and hadn't even lost much usage time, considering its been used fairly much.) And I have a 3 year extended warranty, that, of course, doesn't cover the battery! Grrrrrrr!
But there's a tiny bit of good news. . . I learned a very good tip ---I didn't know, until I was on the phone with the HP sales guy spending $160 for a new one (double grrrrrrr) that you can still use your laptop with a dead battery, if you take the battery out!!!! I thought there was no way to use my laptop, and now I can, so at least I won't lose valuable computing time while I'm waiting for UPS. Small consolation, but I HATE it when I don't have access to my computer!

Yes laptop batteries are only rated to last 1 year. Some last far longer others seem to die right on schedule. It is the nature of the beast unfortunately. I can tell you that using the battery is a good thing. Having one fully charge always, never discharging and recharging regularly will cause them to fail. From your description that was not your case but just something to keep in mind.

Tip for the replacement:
Dont insert the battery when at home.. it will make its lifespan far longer.
Just keep it on the AC, unless youre doing important stuff ofc. -
"that's life"

Been running AC mode in all my HP computers from 1.5years to 2year and the batteries still last very close to when new.
The real tip is to cycle the battery once a month or so. That means let it run from full charge to near empty (10%). Then charge it up.
