My second post today thats miner for the quick reponse to my first question. Second question is about the battery. Again i have only had this laptop for about 2 days now and ran the battery dead twice and charged it up before i ran it dead again, and now seeing that battery while plugged in saying only 96% and total battery 97% (again while plugged in) is this normal? have i already killed that battery 4 % already...?? any suggestions

PS this is better than the online tech chat that compaq offers
    thanks again in advance :D

Running the battery dry is not a good idea. Repeated complete discharges of the battery is a sure way to kill it. May I suggest setting your laptop to go to standby or hibernate when battery reaches around 5%.

A similar thing happened to me. My battery will only charge up to 98%. What I did was to drain the battery to around 40%. I then removed it and stored it for several days. When I finally put the battery back, it charged to 100%. Guess I was lucky.

You can download mobilemeter, it can show you your battery wear.

When I said I guess I was lucky, I meant that I stumblled upon it by chance. I was going to use my laptop of AC for several days so I decided to pull the battery for storage. I was not expecting it to go back to 100%. It was pure luck.

I suggest you google mobilemeter and download it. It should show you your battery wear level. On my laptop, it was showing 0 wear when it would only charge to 98%.

BTW, in case your laptop has an option in BIOS for calibrating the battery, don't use it. It will completly drain the battery.

    Good luck!

0 wear means that the program is reading that there is no wear and tear on your battery. In case you have a v2000, mobilemeter has been known to report wrong battery wear level on this model.

Worse case scenario, try to get compaq to send you a replacement battery since it is less than a week old.

My DV4000 12-cell battery wear in a rate of 1-2% per week for the first 4 weeks (6% after 4 weeks), then another 2% in the next 4 weeks. I run the battery 50-80% dry 2-3 times a week. It seems it will get stablized. For complete discharge, you are supposed to do that once every 2-3 months to recalibrate the battery according HP.

What are you people rambling about? This sort of wear and tear should only be apparently after hundreds of discharges

Hi Soul814, you may try to recalibrate your battery as HP recommended. First you fully charge it. Then turn off any battery power options and allow the laptop to drain completely. Plug it back and charge it up again.
The life time of a lithium battery is around 500 charging cycle when it can hold only 50% of less its capacity.
