I've got an HP Compaq nw8240 and when I move the mouse over the battery icon it says Plugged In, Not Charging. It only shows a 40% charge too, and if I unplug the AC adapter the battery will drain and then recharge back to 40% again.

I'm running the latest version of Windows 7 also. Anyone have any advice?

I've also tried updating the BIOS but when I download the file from HP's support site it and run it all it does is restart my computer and nothing changes. Thanks.

A problem with one of the cells. Replacement is probably needed.

In the battery, correct? I had similar problems from my old Dell and bought two batteries from eBay and those crapped out within weeks of buying them so I don't think I'll make that mistake and buy it directly from HP. Thanks for the help.

I had the same problem with my 8510p. It was weird because it happened right after I used the HP Battery Check software I had just downloaded from their website. Of course the software couldn't have caused the battery to discharge from 93% capacity to 11% in a matter of a couple of minutes. But the coincidence was startling.

My new HP battery arrived this morning and I'm a happy camper once again. Anyway, the reason I'm responding is to tell you that I don't think you need to necessarily buy from HP. Just make sure it's an actual HP battery. Do buy from a trusted vendor though. I got mine from NewEgg. I saw other vendors who referenced the model number of the battery that I wanted, or otherwise made it seem like it was an HP battery. But closer inspection revealed that they were not actual HP signed.

    Good luck! :)

I'll have to check Newegg then. The battery I bought on eBay I thought was a Dell OEM but turned out it was a cheap knockoff which died on me a few weeks after I bought it.

Other than Newegg, do you recommend any other websites that sell batteries that are reputable?

Wow, $160 for a battery. I wasn't expecting it to be that expensive, considering I paid $300 for the laptop.

Yeah, that price is a bit of a drag isn't it? :( That's the same battery I needed. It wasn't in HP's shop. I ended up going with NewEgg because I know and trust them. I saw "better" prices (some too good to be true in my opinion) but knew nothing about the vendors. I had asked about reputable vendors for notebook batteries in another thread but never got an answer on that. Perhaps someone can chime in here.

I tried letting the battery die completely until it wouldn't turn on anymore, then let it recharge over night. I got it up to 55% but it still says Plugged in, Not Charging. I can at least wait a few weeks and pick up a new battery when I have the laptop paid off if I just keep it plugged in, hah.
