I have a dv1000 and i really do love my computer, until now. I've been having problems with the battery, well i think thats what it is. The issue is when my AC adapter is plugged in the socket and connected to my computer sometimes it will say charging and as soon as i move an inch it will say not charging(as if it's not plugged up, but it is). Well i thought it was the ac adapter so i bought a brand new hp ac adapter and same problem. So now im really thinking maybe it's just my computer and i need a new one or something. please help :(

A new BIOS was issued fairly recently (F.28) that supposedly fixed a charging issue. Perhaps that BIOS update would help you?

my old compaq had a similar problem too. it all started when my battery got drained out fasst within a month, only could last 15mins on battery. Every time i plug the Ac adapter in would charge but movin just the wire up/down/left/right it would stop, or the light would be blinking on and off continuously then stop.. I later noticed my adapter wire started to burn on the tip and realized over voltage was my whole problem :( (I had the AC adapter plugged directly into the wall all this time, w/o using some kind of surge protector.. ya my mistake)

BIOS updates are a free download from HP' support site...
    http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html?pageDisplay=drivers

But I dont think this is going to solve your issue. The recent update was for the newer dv6000 series notebooks not the dv1000. From your description it looks like the solder joints on the motherboard which attach to the power jack and the power cord might have worn out and basically causing it to lose contact with the motherboard when you move the notebook. This was an issue with some older HP notebooks where the power jack was connected by solder to the motherboard.

I use to have a DV1680us which is of course a DV1000 series. I also have that problem, having a hard time charging my laptop I need to move the tip of the plug up and down just to charge it. But whenever I move it by an inch I'm back where I started. Then I've notice the tip is getting hotter, until I burn the tip of the charger. So I purchase a new adapter, then ending burning that too. I call HP they said my heat sink must be the problem. Well I send it to HP charge me $750 to fix it, almost the same cost of a brand new laptop.

I believe the DV1000 series has it flaws on its design. If you notice the heat sink is closer to the charging plug. Whenever your heat sink is not doing what it supposed to do it will damage the tip of your charger. If you compare the newer laptop under DV2000, DV6000, and DV9000. The charger plug is far away from the heat sink, the heat sink is in your left side well the plug is in your right side. Unlike DV1000 series they are both on the left side.

I hope HP will do a recall on this, It only proven that I'm not the only one having this problem. Upon reading this thread people having the same issue like my DV1680 has
