I'm thinking of the following configuration:

    8730
    DreamColor 1920x1200
    QX9300 processor (quad core)
    Quadro FX3700

Anyone have something similar (even if one component is off) and can tell me how long their unit lasts on battery?

I'm thinking of jumping on the 8730 deal that's going on and battery life is the main thing that would make me choose this over something else.

    Thanks!

(I had an 8710 with T9600 processor and the Quadro FX3600 and it got 3.5 hours on power saving profile. Wondering if the QX9300 kills battery life, because a Dell M6400 with that in it gets only 1 hour 45 minutes.)

How about just anyone with a QX9300? I am fairly sure the FX3700 won't be an issue. (Since I had the FX3600 before.)

Anyone getting good battery life with a QX9300? (Good = 3+ hours on the standard 8-cell battery, or 2.5+ hours on a 6-cell, idle tasks just running Windows in balanced or power saving profile.)

Bumping this because I'm interested in the same thing, bouncing back and forth between the 8730w and the Dell M6400

I had one of those briefly. In case you didn't see on the Dell forum the M6400 battery with that config is about 1hr:45min to 2:00 on power saving profile.

According to my sources though, the battery life on an M6400 with a normal core-2 duo and quadro 2700, is still only around 2hr:30min. The choice of desktop chipset had a far higher impact than I'd have imagined.

There is a 8730w deal going on?

There was. 18% off deal ended after January.

This is the second time I've seen that deal though so it's possible it comes back every now and then.

Yeah it's pretty frequent. I was expecting more though. Looks like I'll have to go the EPP path if I'm interested.

I'm planning on it. Since Dell wouldn't replace the glossy Covet screen that they said would be matte finish, I'm kind of looking forward to taking that same set of pictures I did with the Covet and showing how a matte screen looks 400% better.

Of course I may eat my words there, but judging by every other screen I've seen ever... yeah.

Update on the on-topic issue, I got a call from someone who seemed to be from HP Corporate. She still didn't provide any details on why there was suddenly a 30-day delay 5 days into an advertised 10-day shipping window. But she did make a genuine effort to rectify the situation, and said she had been personally guaranteed a ship date on or before the 20th.

I'm beginning to suspect the factory in China is causing the problem. The lack of information is due to them not filling out company communication properly. The inability to contact them is probably due to both language and time zone barriers.

Problem is, the HP premium pricing was -supposed- to pay for not having to deal with that crap. But they've made the unit pricing competitive to make up for it, so we'll see what happens.

The factories in Shanghai were closed over the recent Lunar New Year holidays, so there is a major backlog on orders to fill.

See, finally that is starting to make some sense. I didn't know they were having a holiday season.

That still begs the question why orders are being routed there if they have more than one factory but at least there's something resembling an answer.

Also, oops, I got my threads confused...
