Does anyone have any idea of how it will run when it's released? and are there any options that would allow me to play it on my envy such as an external graphics card or something?

Well we don't know much details on the specifications, but I do know it will be around Bad Company 2 Territory and then some since they are saying they are going to make the PC Version a DX 10/DX 11 only game (but they are sloppy, I am sure people can crack the DX 9 mode to get enabled lol).

That being said, if you use your 5650M, I think medium settings at 1366x768 with shaders medium or low and shadows off or low.

Unfortunately the Envy 14 does have a PCI-e Integrated ExpressCard. Therefore, there is no way to get VIDock working on your laptop for an external card. They only viable solution is for you to take out your Wi-Fi card and plug it in that mini-PCIe. However, even that might require you to use a modded BIOS that gets rid of that port's whitelisting. Nando might give you a better idea on the BIOS part and VIDock in general.

The VIDock thread is in the gaming section.

    Agreed.

I am going against what I swore I would not do. Build a new computer for gaming. I bought the Envy because I was not going to game anymore... But after owning Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, 2 ans 2142 -- I couldn't bare the thought of BF3 on XBox 360.

There is no way BF2 will run in the slightest desireable mode on the 5650.

Uh, I can play BF2 and BF:BC2 on my laptop with a 9400M g, I'm sure the Envy would have no problem making it playable.

BC2 runs smoothly on mine, top 2 settings on high and the two below that on medium (forgot the names).

Have you seen the trailer? I'm pretty sure it is not doctored. I seriously doubt this machine can handle it. They, so far, haven't announced plans to even bring the game to consoles. Unreal is soon debuting their "next generation" engine, I wouldn't be surprised if DICE wants to do the same with BF3, and the new frostbite 2 engine.

Ummm... BF3 is also going to the consoles under Frostbite 2's DX 9 standards. However, they are going to "disable" DX 9 for PC and run it on the DX 10/11 Standards (which if they are sloppy, they could leave a trail of DX 9 port mess and guess what? People will start hacking to enable DX 9 for PC's).

Also, Epic Games still isn't ready to release Unreal Engine 4. A while ago they would release it if announcement of a next-gen console is ready (which isn't even close at all of being in stages of workable development).

That, we don't know ;) But obviously, for now PC is the platform of graphics advancement.

To the topic: For me, laptops just aren't made for hardcore gaming. I require 60FPS, and only SCII on my E14 runs so decently (low shaders). For the rest of the games, I choose my home-built desktop PC. I recommend you that. Even if BC3 will run on E14, you will probably have to minimize all the graphics settings. What's the sense of playing a revolutionary game in terms of graphics, physics, animation etc. if it will look like BC2 on Your laptop? It's not only about "will the game play at all?" but also about quality of the game itself the computer can handle.

In my opinion, a game is more than graphics. It is about how fun it in the gameplay. I care more about how the plot goes or how the multiplayer work over HDR, Bloom, Tessellations, Dynamic Shadows. In fact, for many games I play, I find the Shadows, Bloom, HDR to be really overkill and hurts my eyes and the immersion of the game. Sometimes I feel like the 1980's and early 1990's got videogaming right by giving you the general gist graphics-wise what is happening in the game and use your imagination to picture it all out.

Sure I love graphics but I don't think graphics is the defining feature of what makes a game good and even if I have to lower it, as long as I am having the thrill on the gameplay, plot, experience, the game is a winner in my books. Graphics for me is just a secondary viewpoint to how good a game should be experienced.

That is why I still tend to stick with powerful laptops, so I can game on the go and I am willing to sacrifice the graphics to keep me entertained with the gaming immersion of the plot or experience in the game.

I agree with You. I didn't mean to say that graphics are the most important in any video game - far from that. What I meant, is the thing that right now (etc. by judging from the trailer and some previews) seems revolutionary in BC3 is mainly its graphics. And with a laptop, You won't be able to experience this in full.

That is really true for what DICE is going with this, but I don't think I need all the graphics to enjoy the gameplay of BF3. Battlefield for me is all about the action, not the visuals.

Well right now they are toting the immersion of the game through the new graphics and really publicizing the single player experience. So it is all we have to go off of. We can only hope they will bring out the open large scale multiplayer combat that the series is known for.

When is Battlefield 3 set to come out anyways?

I might have to get to work on a Vidock using an old laptop I have to get things running.
