I recently purchased the Belkin f5d8073 N wireless expresscard adapter, because my laptop's internal wireless card was acting up (i.e. not working).

I installed the driver from the disc (making sure the card was not plugged in until prompted), restarted my computer, and of course XP doesn't recognize the card.

I then hardwired myself to my router, via ethernet cable, and downloaded a driver from the belkin site, again, the card was out, and then i restarted my computer.

When it came on it flashed a message saying something like "found new hardware: network controller" then some other message came up saying that it found my card. It worked perfectly until I turned the computer off then on again the next day..same problem as the first, no detection.

I tried installing and reinstalling about every driver on the belkin site for this card. In the bios the internal network adapter is off (as suggested in another thread i read somewhere). The wifi switch is also off. (though even if I turn it on, the light remains orange.)

Then again it worked while I was hardwired, but I've tried many different ways, and decided that hardwiring doesn't somehow flip its "Hey, I should work now" trigger.

So now I'm about banging my head of the wall trying to get this thing to work.

My Computer is an HP Compaq presario v6000 (i think)

    My OS is XP SP2

My modem is a Westell model number: c90-610015-05

My router is a Linksys wrt54g

and again my external card is a Belkin f5d8073 N wireless expresscard adapter

    Any help would be appreciated.

First, if the Wireless light is off, it means your WLAN is off. Open your Wireless Assistant from the CP and make sure it's turned on. Most HP systems also have a Wireless Enable function in the BIOS, though it shouldn't be interfering with an external adapter.

Check your Plug 'n Play settings also. It should be recognized as soon as it's plugged in, so if it isn't, PNP might be set wrong. If it's okay, try a manual hardware install (from the Add Hardware function in the CP).

You're also going to have to set your adapter to either Wireless G or Mixed. Network speed is determined by the slowest device, which in this case is your router, so even though you've got an N adapter you're only going to connect at G speeds. Make sure your Router's Wireless Mode is set to Mixed or Wireless G only. When dealing with N and G devices, using Mixed gives better results.

Make sure you setup an additional Wireless Profile/connection for your external card - if you haven't the system is defaulting to the original connection.

Well, HP Wireless Assistant won't open, so I can't do anything in there. Should the BIOS internal network adapter be enabled?

The router has been mixed, so that's not the problem.

I don't really know how to setup additional wireless profiles.

Edit: I also don't know how to change PNP settings. Though I have manually installed the driver from add hardware. It says that the device cannot start.

Edit2: I went into the BIOS to see what the option was called, and decided to enable it. Now it decided to work. And if the past is anything to go by, it will work until I turn it off or disconnect it. And since I like to take full advantage of my wireless actually working, I will be doing no further debugging tonight. But I ask that you and/or anyone else check back tomorrow, and I will either say that it is fixed or that it bugged out again.

Alright, well, it started to not work again. It worked all weekend because I never turned my computer off from when it was working, but the computer went into sleep mode, turning the internet off, and making the card unrecognizable. I tried restarting. Still nothing. Anyone have any new suggestions?
