Hey, I was about to place an order for a new envy beats 14 with 8gb, but I am pretty sure it would be cheaper to just get it with 1DIMM of 4gb ram and buy another one. Anyone know where I can get a good quality compatible 4GB DIMM for it? Should I buy one from HP?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=skim525X832Xb238ff925d2c84fdacf071ada2f9a289

Thinking of just getting that as it matches all the specs and I believe it should run dual channel. I am just concerned as to why this is $40 while the other original Envy rams are around $100. Is their any big difference between this and the stock ram?

    Thanks.

If you intend to go the 8GB memory route, it would be cheaper in the long run to go with the least expensive memory option from HP now, and just buy a 2 x 4GB kit of RAM from Newegg or Amazon for $80.

Absolutely not! You will get fleeced. HP does not make (a majority of) their money from the sale of the actual laptop. They make their money from the upgrades and accessories they sell you after the fact.

For example, to obtain 2 x 4GB of memory for the Envy 14, HP charges $150 for the upgrade. You could buy that same memory from Newegg or Amazon for $80, install it yourself, and sell the 2GB modules that came with the laptop for extra cash.

As I mentioned earlier, HP makes their money by (over)charging for their upgrades and accessories to their products. This is the same for memory and hard drives in their laptops. The upgraded memory you buy from HP is no different than the memory you can purchase on your own from a third party retailer like Newegg or Amazon.

My recommendation? Get the cheapest memory option you can with your Envy 14, buy a 2 x 4GB kit of DDR3 memory from Amazon for like $80, and then sell the 4GB kit that came with your laptop.

as for the type of ram you will be getting.

I dunno if they're still using it but last year when the envy14 came out it was Samsung DDR3 ram at 1333mhz (downclocked to 1066mhz by the motherboard if you had an i3/i5 chip in the computer)

Ya actually I checked the pricing, the cheapest option for me to get a 4GB 1 DIMM with my laptop and grab the 4gb from newegg. I just want to know about the quality of it as many of the members on this forum use that in their ENVY 14s. If anyone can check out that link I am just concerned why it is $40, are their any big differences?

Yea thanks, that is the one I am getting, 1333mhz, many of the members on this forum have purchased that Newegg one, but I couldn't find a detailed post if anyone used it alongside a OEM 4GB stick. Just need to make sure that they are still using the same ram in these envys.

RAM is RAM, no major differences between them except brand preference, I would choose the cheapest one you can find. BTW, the actual micron RAM that comes with the Envy goes for $42.99. The earlier Envy's came with Samsung but im pretty sure the later ones come with Micron..mine did at least. There really shouldn't be a difference anyway. Also, if you think the $150 upgrade price from HP is expensive, Apple charges $400 for 8GB RAM upgrade for Macbooks =|
