I thought I would post this here as there wasn't much of a reply in off topics.

Hi, I'm currently thinking of getting a laptop from the states and having it shipped to Canada. The store offers a variety of carries and I'm not sure which is best as theres many stories out there about ridiculous 'handling fees'. I believe the store offers FedEx, EMS, UPS and USPS. If anyone has any experience doing what I'm about to do, please speak up as it will be of great help to me.

    Thanks.

Well, I think you can hear horror stories about any of them - for the most part I've mostly had reliable experiences with FedEx, UPS and USPS (not familiar with EMS). I'd probably go with whichever is most affordable; I don't know that any of them are going to definitively be worse than the others.

UPS is definitely the biggest company of that bunch, but I would say they all have their merits and occasional flaws, so go with on that provides package tracking and the cheapest price! (I know fedex and ups provide tracking... not sure about USPS...)

As a logistics manager, I feel qualified to chime in on this one. All can be good and all can be bad. The best advise I can give is to avoid ground service. Personally, I prefer FedEx and that is who I have my contracts with but all have their merits.

Plus, really don't like the UPS brown or the God awful yellow/red of DHL. Both hurt my eyes :D

For cross border shipments such as US to Canada, all have the same capabilities.

Never had any problems with UPS and they seem to be the most used here in the states

It depends on who is best for the area you ar shipping to. For example, we have a fedex hub very close, however, DHL consistanly beats thier socks off, even though they have to drive 60+ miles to get to us. They are probably all good/bad :)

I'm sure they're all good within the states. But the problem I have is with shipping it across the border and getting hit with brokerage fees. Which company hits you with the least, I'm looking to save money. :)

I didn't see you list it, but I've had great experiences with DHL

DHL is the least expensive and for a reason. Their service is lacking to say the least.

Fed Ex. Fast, reliable, and gentle. And gentle. Something you want when shipping a laptop.

kotsoswin I've dealt with DHL two times and I liked their service (and still do). I have heard bad things about UPS/USPS (at least here), so experiences vary.

Your going to hear bad things about all of them, so it's really just a matter of opinion. But coming from the companies side of things not the consumer, DHL has been great!

Cargo shipping nowadays becomes more and more useful especially to those who are oceans apart. It is a physical process of transporting goods and cargo, very reliable and convenient to access.
