    HP ZT3000 configuration

    Intel(R) Pentium(R) M Processor 725 (1.6 GHz)
    Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition
    15.4" WVA WSXGA+ (1680x1050)
    64MB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) 9200
    512MB DDR SDRAM (2x256MB) OR 512MB DDR SDRAM (1x512MB)(+50) ***
60 GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive OR 60 GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive (+50) ***
    DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive
    Intel(R) Pro Wireless 2200 802.11b/g & Bluetooth

The places with the astericks indicate where I am not sure of what to choose. I really only want to make one of those upgrades, but I do not know which one is more worthwhile. Are 4200 RPM hd's really crappy? I will use this laptop more for school purposes with minimal gaming, but will watch movies on it. Please give me your opinion on the configuration and which one (RAM or HD) to upgrade. Thanks.

By the way, my price range without coupons or APP or EPP should be under $1600... thanks.

One thing you can do to lower the price is to buy only ONE stick of 256mb RAM, then order another stick online. It's quite a bit cheaper that way. [ :D]

It depends on whether you will really plan to buy extra RAM from a third party and update your notebook in the near future.

Personally, I knew I would not take the time to update my RAM right now because for what I will be running, 512MB is more than enough. So, I opted to upgrade to the 60GB 5400 HDD and leave the 512MB RAM at 2x256. They say in this forum that the 4200 is slow on boot up and when intially loading software, but once on there all is fine. However, I am a programmer and will be working with large files and doing web development and the like. So, a faster HDD was better for me right now. If there is ever a programming software that needs more than 512MB and I will be using it, I will update my RAM at that time. Right now, my thinking is that is definitely over a year (maybe two) away.

I believe it comes down to what do you need right now. Hope this helps.

    Fatank04,

If you're not planning on upgrading your system anytime soon, get the HDD upgrade. Since the ram it still the same MB amount, you get no performance increase, but changing to a 5400rpm HDD, you'll notice the speed difference.
