    The link I've provided is the official AMD WHQL notebook driver for Oct 2012. 64 bit version. If your computer is 32 bit (which I highly doubt), change the "64" after the "win8_" part to "32" to download that.

    Lifted the post over for referential purposes. :) Have you ensured that you installed the drivers the appropriate way>

    Post updated 8 May 2013 (For referential purposes)

    What you need (This applies to DM4-3XXX with discrete AMD GPUs, DV6-6xxx with AMD Discretes and DV7s with AMD discretes, Intel based processor:
    1. (HP Factory Driver)
      For Windows 7:ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55092.exe.
      For windows 8: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59850.exe
    2. (AMD Reference Driver) Catalyst 13.4 WHQL(April 2013)
      www2.ati.com/DriverS/mobile/13-4_mobility_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe
    3. Download .Net Framework 4. .Net framework is a required software to run Catalyst Control Center. In Catalyst 12.11 Enduro, AMD upped the requirements for .Net framework to version 4 instead of the previous version 3.5. Get the latest update for .Net framework via Windows update.
    4. If you have softwares/files that require backing up, back them up.

    Part 1: To install HP Custom drivers by HP (SP5xxxx):
    1. Firstly run the Catalyst Uninstall Utility to clean up any residual AMD drivers, corrupted or not (Note: this removes all AMD installed softwares). http://www2.ati.com/drivers/amd_cleanup_util_1.2.1.0.exe
    2. If you have installed an Intel HD driver from Intel's website, uninstall it (reason below)
    3. Restart
    4. Run your HP softpaq installer, install everything in the package, restart.

    Part 2: To install Reference drivers by AMD (Better stability and performance):
    1. Go to your Control Panel->Uninstall a program
    2. Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager
    3. While at the uninstall menu, select the first uninstall option that lets you select what to uninstall.
    4. Check to uninstall all features EXCEPT AMD Display Driver (Leave the Integrated graphic Intel HD drivers alone) I repeat do not touch it or things will screw up. Restart the laptop.
    5. Run the Catalyst software installer, select Install -> Custom -> Make sure you have a checkbox with a black frame around the component, "AMD Display Driver". If this is not present, hit cancel and repeat this step and make sure "AMD Display Driver" shows up. This is to ensure the installation file has detected your graphics hardware. If it does not show AMD display driver, the installer is not detecting your GPU.
    6. If step 3 succeeds, make sure all components are selected and hit next to finish the installation.
    7. (Only if it fails) Uninstall Catalyst and begin from step 1 again. This may take more than 1 attempt.

    Part 3: Removing Internet Explorer's Conflicting Stuffs (Startup BSOD prevention)
    1. Locate KB2670838 from your Windows Update under installed updates (answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/kb2670838-installation-and-igdpmd64sys-blue-screen/e8f13e0f-7ea0-4d10-b1b5-71c084110473), Uninstall that update
    2. Check for update again, that update should appear and right click to hide it
    3. IE11/10 will now become IE9
    4. run this microsoft fixit script to disable the bugged hardware acceleration go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9783239
    5. If this doesn't help and you BSOD, go to uninstall a program, Turn Windows features on/off, disable IE.

    Now why you can't touch the Intel HD or update it via Intel's website

    It uses a driver modified by HP or AMD for hybrid/switchable graphics support that enables the laptop to run a secondary dedicated graphic card. Installing a Intel HD driver from Intel's website would also mess up how switchable graphics and hyrbid graphics work because Intel HD drivers on Intel's side are only meant for PCs with standalone Intel HD graphics. It has NO switchable support. The only proprietary drivers that will work are supplied by HP's driver support site.

    Important Note
    I strongly discourage people from using beta drivers. For the follwing reasons:
    1. Beta drivers have more potential stability issues. If this is your primary computing machine, are you willing to sacrifice stability at the cost of getting crashes and such?
    2. They're not digitally signed and you'll need to do certain things to circumvent this feature called "Driver Signature Enforcement" which makes it mandatory for drivers to have digital signatures. On Win 7 64Bit and upwards to windows 8, this feature is effectively permenant unless you *work it around*

    Also, NEVER disable a laptop's Intel HD in any circumstance... Your your display signals are routed through the Intel HD even if you're running the dedicated GPU as the renderer. Disabling an Intel HD causes a black screen that can only be fixed if you re-enabled it via Safe Mode booting.

    Other notes: My own issues, Switchable Graphics mode is unable to toggle to Intel HD from the Radeon HD, it causes a BSOD each time I attempt to do that with SP59850 on Windows 8. Its a DM4 though, I haven't heard of issues on DV6/7 just yet. The only way to go back to the Intel HD for me was to use hybrid graphics.

    Anyway Windows 8 was already unstable for me since the clean upgrade. For that I've reverted back to Windows 7, no complaints.

    ALWAYS back up all important files if there are any.

    Yes, 12.8 had serious BSOD issues (not sure about beta), only with Switchable graphics if u turned that on in the BIOS. :)

    12.8 with hybrid is ok but it's actually slower than switchable graphics. AMD's switchable graphics is less advanced than Nvidia's optimus hyrbid graphics. 12.10 fixed the BSOD though.

    Glad it helped. :)

    I would also like to add, make sure you only install reference drivers on top of the official HP switchable graphics driver (if you are using some sort of DV6t). The newest HP GPU driver that supports windows 8 for the DV6 6100 series of laptops with the AMD 6770m is:

    ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59850.exe

    Tbh, any reference driver for the dGPs are a lot better than manufacturer modified drivers in terms of performance and stability. They contain the latest hotfixes and performance optimisations (great for games). Good for any given laptop but if the user's on a Toshiba, Sony or Panasonic, good luck with the driver locks to the manufacturer.

    But then again, reference drivers cannot be used on the Intel HD.

    Thanks for the info, Encrypted.

    I'm planning to try out the 12.11 drivers, but I have a question: what BIOS graphics setting do I use before installing drivers for the first time? Dynamic vs. switchable graphics?

    This will be the first time I install the reference drivers from AMD, replacing the HP stock drivers. Have the DV7t-6100QE with ATI 6770.

    Both Switchable and Dynamic will work. The drivers are intended to work in both modes but I'd recommend switchable graphics (aka "fixed" in a HP's BIOS)

    I only recommend 12.11 Enduro drivers, not 12.11 beta 13 drivers.

    Beta drivers are not digitally signed. Together with a permanent feature in Windows 7 x64 and Windows 8 called Driver Signature Enforcement, it will require drivers to be digitally signed before they'll be allowed to load. Therefore, it's only advised to touch beta drivers if you're a software developer.

    Updated this post to include 12.11 Enduro. Hope it helps. :) But before you start with this tip, make sure you have the stock HP drivers and its installation file just in case it fails, such errors do happen and I have my personal encounters. It may take a few tries.

    In subsequent reference driver updates after you've got your first reference driver running already, updating is very simple.

    To install:
    2. If step 3 succeeds, make sure all components are selected and hit next to finish the installation.
    3. (Only if it fails) Uninstall Catalyst and begin from step 1 again. This may take more than 1 attempt.

    That's it. :)

    After installing the 12.11 drivers a few days ago, I found that the screen brightness is set to minimum upon bootup, and cannot be adjusted by neither the brightness buttons, nor by the Control Panel. The problem can only be fixed when I switch to the Intel graphics, and then back to ATI. When I shutdown and reboot, the screen brightness problem return.

    Has anyone else seen this problem?

    I did a System Restore, and planning to try the 12.10 drivers to see if I get the same problem.

    Here's Catalyst 13.1 the latest WHQL for 2013 Jan. The brightness issue props up every now on and then on random notebooks both on Nvidia and AMD.

    Just a check,

    ->Start
    ->Right Click Computer
    ->Manage
    ->Device Manager
    ->Display Adapters
    ->AMD Radeon HD 6700M Series
    ->Driver Tab
    ->Read Date
    It should be approx 19/12/2012

    If it indicates 6/11/2012, that's probably still Catalyst 12.11 enduro

    That's just about it, just a workaround until the next WHQL appears (which may fix the issue).

    Actually if the thread doesn't show 13.1 it has an outdated post because 13.1 also has the same whitelisted products embedded in the installer.

    If 12.10 works and does not give brightness issues, you may want to give an alternate version a try. Google for Catalyst 9.01 Enduro 7970M. Though the driver has specifically mentioned 7970M only, it supports the regular GPUs (6000-7000M I remember the last time I read the whitelist) that are listed in normal reference driver releases.
