I recently had to do a complete reinstall because one of the "registy fixers" erased a necessary file and my computer wouldnt load, nor would it allow me to 'repair the windows installation'. So anyhow, I've done that and now there is a black box in a lot of the text entry fields. (passwords..... basically anything.) Is there some setting I need to change?

That sounds like a video driver problem. You may want to try going to HP's site and download & install the latest display drivers for your unit.
