My friend is the owner of an HP pavillion ZV5000, the screen has stopped working. Everything else is fine, plugging in to an external monitor allows the PC to be used, but the laptop LCD is black as night.

What are potential problems I should look for? My only thought off hand was to open it up and make sure the cable inside connecting screen to motherboard hasn't become disconnected somehow. Anything beyond that, I need some help here.

Tilt the laptop so the screen is facing the light. Look carefully and see if you can see a faint image. That will tell you if your backlight is out, or if your entire LCD is out.
