I have a new hp dv6000 and am getting used to the quirks of the hp coming from a Dell. A question - is there a way to turn of the blinking lights on the top and front edge of the laptop when it is in Sleep? It is annoying to me.
Thanks

As far as I know, no. If it really bothers you that much, just use hibernate instead.
-
put a sticker on top of it

it doesn't bother me..... I kinda like it cuz I know it is sleeping or not.
-
There is no way to turn that light off -
The reason it is blinking is to let you know that it is in sleep mode and not shut off or in hibernate mode, so no, you can't turn it off.

I like the blue blinking lights. I prefer to blink so I know it's working properly.
-
I like the lights too. A great indicator whether the computer is shutdown or not.

There is no way to stop the blinking light when you put it on sleep/standby mode. Unless physically removing the bulb or putting a sticker may help.

what is the difference between HIBERNATE versus STANDBY besides power consumption? does one hog tons of memory or what?
-
Hibernate stores the current state of your computer from the ram into the hard drive, then powers off. It hogs the same size as your ram, but you can turn it off.
Standby puts the computer into a low power state, with the data still in the ram (powered by the battery) to enable fast resume. If power is lost during standby, the data is lost too. -
Think of stand-by as, "I'll be going away from my computer for 10 or 20 minutes, but I want everything to still be there when I get back."
Hibernation is more like, "I won't be needing my computer for several hours but I'm kind of in the middle of something important and would like all my applications to remain open while I'm gone."
Really, I see stand-by as fairly useless as I don't really mind waiting the extra 20 seconds for my computer to boot after hibernation. Stand-by also consumes power, which can either a.) drain your battery, or b.) increase your power bill if left plugged in through your AC adapter. Hibernation, rather, simply turns your computer off, thus saving you money and battery power. -
So, is Hibernation as good as shutting computer down? I mean, all it takes it a couple of Gigs on the HD from the Ram right. But it is much faster than booting from shut down.

Yes, but dont completely trust hibernate to work all the time. It can and will fail sometimes and it would be good option to save your work before hibernating.
