Did you do a clean install?

    OR

    Did you manually uninstall bloatware?

How did it work out for you?

How easy was it, and how did you do it?

I just got rid of all the bloatware, and did a few vista tweaks, no clean install at all.

    Notebook is running great.

Out of box I had like 1.5GB Memory usage. Now im at like 800ish.

Clean install + Tweaking would bring you down to like 500-600.

Bald, did you just follow the guide in these forums? And Rusch, can you give me examples of what you uninstalled and about how many things you uninstalled? Also, changing topic, did you guys let it charge for a while after receiving it, or did you turn it on and plug it in and use it while it was charging?

I uninstalled quite a bit. Im not sure of the names of everything, but most stuff that came pre-installed was all bloatware.

When I got my laptop, I put the battery in, plugged it in and used it while charging. I currently have my battery taken out, and just have my notebook plugged in. I mainly have my notebook at my desk, so no need to have battery in.

Sorry if it's obvious for some, but i'm really inexperienced with cleaning it up. Through my whole life, i left nearly everything on desktops, but i did delete stuff that i installed but didn't use. So that means that all the other bloatware that came preinstalled, i never took off. It's worked fine, but won't hurt to clean install right?

Anyway, would you suggest just uninstalling stuff or doing a clean install? I am inept at this stuff, for example, i don't even know how to burn recovery disks. I don't even know what a partition is. And so many other things... :X

From what you are saying I don't even think you'll be able to do a clean install. :p

Just uninstall programs in the control panel, do some Vista tweaks (there are some good guides around these forums) and then run CCleaner and you'll be good. :)

Also look up Revo Uninstaller and Ccleaner on google. Both are free and good to uninstall the bloat. Use these in conjunction with the pcdecrapifier mentioned above. That is what I did on my dv4t which has most all the same stuff. Do not use computers msconfig and control panel, use these programs instead. They clean all the "nooks and crannies" out where the control panel will leave bits of files and such laying around.

A good idea is if you do not know what a particular item is or does, type it into google. I did this and it saved a few things that I needed. For instance I almost got rid of the cyberlink youcam, when it seems to be a good program and necessary to use the integrated webcam. Also I almost got rid of the Digital Persona program that controls the fingerprint reader. The Ccleaner is a good program for turning off needless processes that start during startup. Again, type the processes into google and see if you need them or not.

DO NOT FORGET TO MAKE YOU RECOVERY DISKS BEFORE DELETING ANYTHING. IF YOU SCREW UP, YOU CAN JUST REINSTALL EVERYTHING.

Well, following directions isn't that hard, so i might be able to, plus, it will be "cleaner" than just uninstalling.

Do those programs you guys mention remove all the games that they put on the laptop?

Like I like Minesweeper for example. And my little brother loves the WildTangent games that come with the laptops so I don't necessarily want to get rid of them. I want to get rid of the true crap.

Will these programs allow me to select and choose what needs to be removed?

I believe the "My HP Games" console is different than Microsoft integrated games.

All of those programs will run a scan and provide a list, and you check which programs you want uninstalled. They will not automatically uninstall anything you do not want them too.

Yes, I followed the clean install guide and used the dell disk from my desktop. It worked fine. I just plugged it in and started making recovery disk. I left it on for 24 hours.
