    Hi All

I just got a new dv9000 :) and found out that it was packed with bloatware :( . I got Works even though it had Office, HP imaging even though it had adobe photoshop, and so on... I'm quite new to the bloatware business so my question is if someone have som documantation on that they uninstalled and what they kept?

    Thank you!

Yep, they are packed with bloatware. Online service provider packages, games, Adobe Reader, trial programs (such as MS Office & Symantec), HP support/imaging software, etc. I got rid of everything but Works, Sonic DVD and Movee Autoproducer. My "Add/Remove Programs" list is much shorter now, and the machine(s) boot faster. ;)

Thank you for your answer. I actually gave the bloatware the blame for the slow start, hopefully it will get better after the removals. I'm quite a coward so if someone have i list on the essentials please write/attach it here.

Here is the list for the dv9000 (which looks to be pretty much the same with all HP/Compaq units):

    HP Photosmart Premier v6.0
    HP QuickPlay Direct v2.1
    QuickPlay for Windows v2.1
    Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006
    Microsoft Windows Media Player 10
    Microsoft Money 2006
    Real Rhapsody
Muvee AutoProducer DVD Edition with Burning 5
    Sonic Digital Media Plus 7.0
    Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.x
    Microsoft Works 8.0
Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2006
    Vongo
    Microsoft Office Trial 2003

Oddly, it makes no mention of the HP games (which accounts for most of the bloat).

I would take a look at each program to see if you may have any interest in it. I would leave the Quickplay stuff alone, as your Pavilion has the physical button for it on the laptop, as well as a separate hard drive partition to run it. Aside from WMP10, the rest of the junk is just a matter of preference. Adobe Reader is easily replaced by Foxit Reader, which is much less resource-intensive.

I kept the DVD programs to see if I like them. If I don't, I'll change them for something else. The trial stuff is just garbage to me, so it's history. Norton Internet Security was replaced by AVG Free and ZoneAlarm (which I prefer).

Remember to make your recovery discs or copy the SWSETUP folder to dvd if you ever want to reinstall any of the original programs (or uninstall them accidentally). The executables will all be in that folder.

Oh, and enjoy your new lappy! :)

    Thank you, very helpful!

I looked the Foxit Reader up and it looks to be the perfect solution for my everyday annoyance with the acrobat h.#ll-reader! Thanks!
