    Hi everyone,

I have a Hp HDX16 1005EA with Optiarc BC-5500 Blu Ray drive. I've installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bits and now the blu ray doesn't work anymore. It still playing DVD's and CD's, but not Blu Ray's. I re installed the HP media smart (last version for my windows version on the HP website) and I'm getting the following message: The format is not supported.

I'd llike to know what I have to do to fix this problems.

    Regards

I've sent an e-mail to HP customer care and here's the answer:

Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.

I understand from your email that after upgrading the operating system to Windows 7 the blu ray functionality is not working on your HP HDX X16-1005EA Premium Notebook PC as you get an error message "The format is not supported". I also see that you have re-installed the HP MediaSmart but issue persists.

I will make sure that I give you the appropriate information.

Daniel, it is a known issue that blu ray functionality will not work if you install retail version operating system. However, as a workaround, please download and install the HP DVD Play software to check whether you can play blu ray. This software can be downloaded from the web link given below.

    HP DVD Play

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...softwareitem=ob-67262-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

NOTE: Though the software pertains to Windows vista, it should be equally applicable for Windows 7.

NOTE: Clicking the link may give an error indicating it is invalid. If this occurs, copy the portion of the address on the remaining line(s) and paste it at the end of the address showing in your browser until the complete address is displayed in the Address box.

If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you.

I did it, and still the same. If I try with the HP DVD Play the program closes.

    New answer from HP:

    Dear Daniel,

Thank you for writing back to HP Total Care.

I understand from email that the suggestions provided in the previous mail did not resolve the issue.

Daniel, the next available option is to revert back to factory installed operating system (Windows Vista). Future HP mediaSmart updates may resolve the issue.

If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will be happy to assist you.

    My Answer:

Oh right, I got one of the most expensive laptops on the market and you are saying to me that I need to put back a lousy and old system?

I think HP needs to find a solution, because everyone is moving to Windows 7. And I got this laptop to watch blu ray movies and now I can't because of HP incompetence. Lots of users with the same problem and you guys just say we need to wait? What kind of company is this, which doesn't have a solution even when windows 7 has been released for months now?

This is not an old outdated laptop!

I can use any player to watch blu ray, just give me a solution, I really don't mind using another software rather of HP Media Not so Smart!

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And now what I supposed to do?

well, this might not be a solution you'll like, but you can probably buy PowerDVD or some other DVD software that supports Blu Ray playback.

But Anyway, I'll try with the power dvd 9 trial.

    Thanks!

well I'm pretty sure Blu Ray won't work with VLC or Media Player. MediaSmart probably needs an update first.

A few suggestions. You need MediaSmart DVD version 3.1.3509. The link is available in this subforum in the driver updates for your laptop. Also, maybe check your video drivers. My DV5 only worked with versions 1.85 & 1.86, & not with the version supplied from HP. The version avaiable through Windows Update may be worth a try. Finally, make sure the region setting (ie A, B or C) is correct.
Hope this helps. I had a similar problem when I upgraded to Win 7, & this solved it for me.

    Thanks Richo,

I'm getting the Media Smart 3.1.3509. But I didn't find the 1.85 or 1.86 driver for my video card (GeForce 9600GT).
Also I didn't understand the thing about region, how is it work?

    Thanks!

Basically you have the same hardware (optical drive, video card) as I do. Suggest uninstalling your video drivers through windows uninstall, then use windows update to reinstall after a reboot. The setting for blu-ray region is made in the mediasmart settings while you have a blu-ray in your drive.
    Hopes this helps.

Where did you source your video driver? Nvidia? HP? I found the driver from Windows update worked the best.

Well, the Media Smart DVD still not supporting Blu Ray, so I don't have any access to settings menu.

And I got the driver from Nvidia site.

    Thanks

Sorry to hear that this still isn't resolved. I guess I can only suggest what worked for me. I haven't tried the latest drivers fron the nvidia site, so I am not sure if they are compatible. Certainly I have found the nvidia driver provided via Windows Update (in the optional download section) worked well for me. It's version 8.16.11.8691, which probably is the same version being offered by HP for your laptop. It is an older version compared to the latest driver being offered by nvidia, but the newest driver isn't always the best.
HP QuickPlay also worked for me, but from memory I had to run it in Vista SP2 compatibility mode for it to work. QuichPlay is getting a bit old now, & being able to play the latest blu-ray titles seems dependent on having up to date player software.
Again, all I can suggest is to uninstall your current video driver, & reinstall the version either provided by HP or Windows Update.I agree that going back to Vista is a "poor " solution. I actually did this untill i was able to find a solution that worked for my laptop. I found a little trial & error was required till I was able to make it work.

I did as you said and nothing at all.
I unistalled the HP software and the video card driver, cleaned the registry. Installed the video card driver through the Windows Update, installed the Media smart, and nothing :(

    Anyone else has an idea?

    Cheers

Just another thought. What BIOS version are you running? The BIOS was updated for Win7.

as far as i know, there is no native blu-ray player from Windows OR HP. seems kind of silly. i made a trip to the bay and snagged a free copy of PowerDVD 9 Ultra.

I agree that there is no native blu-ray player from Windows. However, HP Quickplay & MediaSmart DVD are designed to play blu-ray. There are however many problems being expeienced, & HP don't seem to be very good at offering solutions. The appropriate version on WinDVD or PowerDVD is a reliable solution for a price.
