    Booting from USB flash drive?

    Has anyone successfully booted a dvx500 or dvx000 from a USB flash drive? I've tried a few of the options, and I can't get them to work. Any tips from someone who's actually done it?

    Format the UFD using the tool found here: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306.html and specify "Create a DOS startup disk" "using DOS system files located at:" and supply (at minimum) the boot files IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM.
    You could further include dos config files to add dvd-rom drivers etc. I believe there is also a different floppy image option for NTFS support boot but have not investigated it yet.

    The dos option works for me on both pavilion machines (dv6233 & dv9220).

    I looked at that tool, and it was asking for DOS files to put on the disk. I actually was hoping to get linux or something booted of a flash drive, so the DOS disk doesn't help that much :(. I tried a few of the USB boot options, but none worked on some of the popular usb/flash linux distros.

    well if its linux what you want, then get the utility found here: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23839.html
    When you select the option "Hard Drive - Format Drive Key as a fixed disk, mapping it to drive C: under DOS" it will write a SYSLINUX mbr+bootloader on the flash drive followed by an option to install vmlinuz.
    You can stop after the first stage and work it out from there using syslinux.cfg...
