My brand new HP Envy dv7 (A8 Quad Core, HD7680g, 750GB HDD, Win8) broke itself... I fired it up one morning (after having it 2 days with no issues) and it worked as normal for about 5 minutes, then Windows Update announced that it needed to restart to finish installing updates, so I obliged... after installing updates (about 20 minutes of waiting) it shut down and started to start back up... all of a sudden it gives me this blue page that says something along the lines of, your computer is damaged, please use the recovery function or usb/dvd recovery media to fix this problem, blah blah... I have tried everything.... even had a friend let me borrow his legit Windows 8 DVD to try to re install the software... but when it gets to the "select partition to install to" it won't let me select any partitions because "the selected partition is of the GPT format" blah blah some more...

well that's my long a** boring story, now here's what i want to know,

is there a way to just, completely format my HDD, so then I can install windows 8 from scratch without having this stupid GPT format error. i've never had any issue like this with any other computer i've used, so any help is very much needed and appreciated... thanks

Have you tried a system recovery? It's ridiculous you should even have to do this after 2-days and due to some Windows update but it's a solution that's worked for me in the past when all else has failed. Here's a link to the steps and then the step by step instructions copied from the HP site below:
