Try the following medthods:
* First Method:
Go to the website of your DVD drive, look for its name and series or model to search for the latest driver in their website. What your computer has done is it was looking locally for the latest driver which is the same thing with you look for your newest shirt inside your closet while there is newer shirt in the store that you don't know. So, you would need to look for the latest version of the driver for your DVD rom and install it.
* Second Method (you don't wanna deal with this unless the above method doesn't work, kinda risky):
1. Go to Start -> Command prompt
2. Type: Regedt32.exe
3. Press OK
4. The Registry Editor will appear.
5. On the left side of the Editor, Click the (+) sign next to each of the following keys to expand them:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
SYSTEM
CurrentControlSet
Control
Class
6. Find the following key but don't click the (+) sign next to it, just click on it:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
(be careful to find the correct one, you'll screw if you don't follow this exactly)
7. On the right panel, look for 2 values named: "LowerFilters" and "UpperFilters"
8. Right click on each of them and choose DELETE for both to erase them.
9. Close the Registry Editor
10. Restart computer. Your DVD rom should work by now.
This may cause some of your softwares that relating to Digital Audio to function improperly but you can always uninstall them and re-install them as you wish. You rather lose the software than your DVD/CD rom don't you?

did you spill anything on the laptop. I had this problem but it was because I spilled coffe on it. I had to open the laptop up and with a moist cloth clean the coffe stain out. -
if the bios doesnt detect it then thats a hardware issue
does the drive tray eject? if so then power is getting to it.
contact HP, u need to send urs in or they cud send u a replacement drive since its quite easy to replace urself provided it is the drive and not the motherboard or connector.
