When i have the ac adapter on, the screen gets brighter. How do i change the setting so that the monitor is that bright without the adapter plugged in? I kind of like the extra brightness.. but if that would really drain the battery, or cant be done, i'll just adjust...

Yes it can be done and yet it does drain battery a lot more. However, it can be easily changed to however you like. All you have to do is fn + f8 to increase brightness and fn + f7 to lower it. The machine will remeber this setting for the next time you go on battery power too. So you don't even have to set it everytime. Personally I like the battery setting at least one lower, that way if I accidentally pulll out the power cord I can instantly see it due to the drop in brightness.

Right, it was very clear that when the power cord was out, the brightness was very low. At least, to my eyes. How much battery would it drain if i added 1 or 2 levels of brightness to the default level?

Not sure, I just know it does use more.
However, I run it 2 levels below full most of the time and that is what I use to get my 3.5-4 hours of battery life.
