My brand spanking new ze2000t (from hpshopping) came and has a few small scratches near the bottom of the screen on the brightview. They are visible, but not atrocious. Is it worth it to return this and have them send me a new one, or would that one probably have problems like this too?

If it's very visible, I'd personally go and send the unit back and wait for a new one. When I put this much money down for a notebook, I expect it to be working perfectly from day one.
