Which do you prefer: The Brightview screen or the basic matte screen?
-
I like brightview, but depends on personal preference. Some like it some dont. Search through the forums, there was a thread with the same sort of disscussion on glossy vs matte screens.
-
Glossy is great if you want a portable DVD player. Then again, if you want a portable DVD player, I really think buying a dedicated portable DVD player is a good idea. Now, those who choose it do have their reasons, and it's certainly a respectable choice if it fits your needs.
For a work computer, though, matte is the way to go. No obnoxious glare, no obnoxious headaches ('cept maybe from the work itself - can't help you with that). -
Glossy 100%. Only thing is if you are doing lot of text work in light in background, you may notice slight reflection in screen as hp screen as very sharp, it shouldn't bother much but for some it does. Other companies don't have this bright view screens I noticed, their glossy screens are soft and works best for text and movie both. Still, hp glossy is best for everything, you can just lower setting and won't notice much.

I'm able to work outside once in awhile thus matte is the way to go for me that is.
-
I go for glossy. I have yet to get a headache from my screen. Even with office lights over top me. Really, it depends on the person.
-
I've only ever owned matte laptops. Seeing the glossy Dell screens in the mall was terrible, the lights above made the screen a white shining glow. However at home, there are no intense lights so it wouldn't be so bad. Since I plan to use my laptop in the classroom, in the car, and at home though...i think I'd opt for matte, just so I wouldn't have to move the screen so much to get the glare away, especially in the car.

Don't like Brightview. Resolution is usually less than Matte. Hurt your eyes

I had a BrightView on my HP zv5000z, loved it. Great colors, and I never had a problem with reflections. They can only get problematic when there are light source(s) behind you, and even then I didn't care.
-
Thanks for all your input!
I'm looking at purchasing a customized DV5000Z (hopefully, at wholesale cost *fingers crossed*) and planned on getting the Brightview screen. I just wanted to see what other people who have actually had a chance to use it had to say about it first. -
I prefer matte. Glossy sucks because you see every little reflection and it gets really annoying. It really depends on your preferance and enviornment.
-
Would this be the best of both worlds?
Get the Brightview, and add a 3M Privacy filter. Cuts down on the glare, and protects the screen. When glare is not an issue, remove and enjoy the Brightview. -

Brightview for games, DVDs, graphics, photos, etc.
Matte for extended writing, editing, any work involving lots of text, code and long documents. -
I need to check out these 3M Privacy filters... Do they lay directly on the screen (yes too tired to find out
)

Reviewer states:
"To fit the screen to your computer, you first stick six small plastic circles, two to each of three of the four sides of your laptop's screen frame. Then you simply slip the sheet between the halves of the plastic circles that act as frame holders, and it is installed and in place.
It took me maybe two minutes to install the six circles on my Dell Inspiron 8200, and then five seconds to slide the sheet into place. It was a perfect fit. It took me another five seconds to slide it out again - like all great things, it is very convenient, easy and simple.
You'll probably slide the sheet out when you're by yourself, and then slide it back in when you're in public. I keep my sheet, in its protective envelope, in my laptop carry bag so it is always with me. It only weighs an ounce or two, and it is very thin, so carrying it is no hassle. The six plastic circles stay on my laptop screen frame all the time."
I'm thinking of getting a HP dv5000 and by pictures, it looks like the privacy filter will have plenty of room to mount the plastic circles. -
Thanks. Wow...$60 is a lot...

(Sorry, isvara. Saw your reply and couldn't resist!)

has anyone tried one of these filters then compared with one of the matte finish screen protector/overlays? I wish I had read these threads before returning the dv9033cl that I had to return because of the refelctions. These would be well worth the effort if you do indeed get the best of both worlds.
FYI, it is not only light sources that cause refelctions in glossy. Light colored backgrounds, even clothing, can cause deep reflections even when the display has a white background. Or maybe I just see it more then some.
But, the BrightView does really give a GREAT color depth and sharp images. No matter what it's just nice to see that screens are finally getting better after really years of simply being slight variations on the same display. -
I prefer glossy, but I don't mind matte either.
As long as they work well, I'm happy. -
i have matte for my V3000Z because i did not like the gloss reflections on the brightview screens!
-
I ordered the non-brightview and it is still very reflective outdoors!
-
Well I had no choice but to take matte, but I'm not complaining. I love my matter screens (desktop back home is as well). I know glossy would have killed me - in my uni dorm room, the big centre circle light would not let it work. My flatmate has a glossy - has to keep tilting his screen. Saying that, if the lights are off, it is beautiful for DVDs
I suppose its personal preference vs environment and how much you can withstand whichever way -
Glossy looks amazing with Counterstrike Source. i prefer glossy mostly because i use my laptop indoors.
-
I will be using my notebook wherever i go, so i like the matte better.
-
Brightview all the way since I'm a hardcore 24 fan.
-
ive always used glossy screen notebooks, i lvoe the glossyness..and the vibrant colors of the glossy screen.. but it is a bit stressful on the eyes.
-
I like glossy screens. I only use my laptop inside the house. I pretty much got it as a desktop replacement.
-
yeah i acually already started a poll on "glossy vs matte screen" ... and if i remember correctly, i think matte was winning....
do u think its really worth $25 more for brightview? Is it that much better? -
good choice, i can tell the picture clarity is sharper and colors are more vivid than previous laptops i've owned with matte screens.
-
Is it me, or are the newer HP BrightView screens actually "glossier" than others on the market? I checked out a number of HP laptops in stores recently, and most of them had much more screen glare than the Sony, Gateway, &c. laptops on the same shelf. I don't know what would cause that -- whether the HPs have a different coating, or if the max brightness is just higher on the other laptops, but several HPs were downright unreadable in stores while other brands were not. For that reason, I decided to play it safe and go with a matte screen on my 6000t CTO.
Has anyone else noticed this? -
i have no idea
.... i havent gotten my baby yet... -
-
o yeah!
i dont know if you heard me say this before (i told a bunch of people), but for my whole life i have used a laptop with 128 mb of ram, and i have to use safe mode every time i go on it just to do simple tasks. And the laptop is not even mine!
So i am positive i will be overjoyed when it comes. -
Ick.
I felt sick simply using 512MB for awhile.
-
oh yeah, u do not even know how frustrating it is to try to do simple tasks with this computer! even in safe mode! and its not even mine!
omg i will seriously cry and go crazy when i get my computer. I will not know what to do, i will be in total shock! -
Anyways, we'd best keep this thread on topic, before we anger the mods.
-
they wont care if we are talking about this horrible computer that i am forced to use, compared to my future-baby...
Anyways, yeah i guess brightview is better, i used to go for matte, but this one dude convinced me cuz it looks so much better. -
I prefer BrightView myself, at least for my notebook.
I've had BrightView on my dv1000 and dv2000, and love it. Very clear picture and vibrant display.
I have a matte monitor for my desktop, and like it as well, but would prefer it be BrightView.
Really comes down to personal preferences, though.
-
yeah it also depends if you are going to be inside the whole time, or if you are going to be traveling and using your laptop outside a lot...
-
I've used my notebook in the middle of a park on a sunny day and didn't really have much of a problem seeing the screen.
I myself don't really see the fuss over it in bright conditions. -
its glossy, so it reflects light. this means that there is an annoying glare on the screen, right!?
....that is what the fuss is over... -
I just don't see why it would bother someone, but, like said before, personal preferences and such.
-
yeah well i cant really argue this cuz my baby hasnt been delivered...
(is it just me or did that just sound like im pregnant?)
and wats up with you always puttin this at the end of your posts?
-
If you ended up giving birth to a dv6000t, that'd be creepy, but cool at the same time.
=P
and wats up with you always puttin this at the end of your posts?
Just something I do.
-
yeah but if you think about it, wat i said did make sence:
it will be delivered to me, and it will be my "baby" ...
and those smileys are starting to get annoying!
...how do you like it!!??
yeah thats right, you hate it! -
I seriously don't mind it...
Anyways, as for BrightView, I think it also depends on how much you like it depending on what type of screen you get. If you get SEC, then it wouldn't look all that great. If you get LPL, AUO, or QDS, it'll look a lot better. -
ok well i have nothing else to say about brightview vs matte, so i just wont say any more......
-
I just received my dv6000t with the matte screen and I love it. It's bright, the colors aren't washed out (as they were on my old Dell SXGA+ screen), the viewing angles are good, and best of all, there is absolutely no glare!
I was on the fence about this when I ordered CTO, and I was second-guessing myself during the weeks afterward, but now I know I absolutely made the right choice. Because of my work (if you can call it work), I have to stare at Word all day in a variety of different lighting enviornments. I also do a lot of photo editing, I play some games, and I rarely watch DVDs on my computer. For my situation, the matte (non-BrightView) screen perfect.
My advice: if you're using your HP laptop primarily for work and you're on the fence about the whole BrightView issue, go with the matte screen. You'll be glad you did. And be thankful that HP still offers the matte option on their consumer notebooks, because hardly anyone else does these days.
(For the record, it's an SEC screen... and it's fantastic! I hope that doesn't detract from my credibility...) -
I love the brightview. Havent had any glare problems at all.
Brightview or Matte?
