HP has these 3 screen options for the DV9700:
- 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900)
- 17.0" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1680 x 1050) BrightView improves color contrast in your images and video
- 17.0" WXGA+ High-Definition Ultra HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1440 x 900) Ultra BrightView offers an improved color gamut by 72%.
Aside from the resolution differences, does anyone know any details regarding the relative quality of these options?
I saw the normal 9500 screen in stores, and it's not bad but IMO the vertical viewing angles really sucked badly and the brightness was very uneven from top to bottom.
Are the more expensive screens going to be better in that respect?

I will give a big fat slice of (virtual) chocolate cake to anyone who can offer some insight into these screen options.
I'm more interested in better brightness and viewing angle than resolution BTW. -
Ive had two dv9500's side by side...one with the WSXGA+ (the one I currently use) and one with the Ultra brightview WXGA+ (the one that the WSXGA+ model replaced).
The UBV WXGA+ is like 2-2.5x as bright as the WSXGA+, it is ridiculous. It also has much more vibrant colors. I use Pidgin.im and the green orb (indicating online status) in the buddy list looked like bright green, NFL turf color on the UBV WXGA+. On the WSXGA+ it looked like (by comparison) looked like those yellow-green Crayola crayons. Very ugly.
Now that I have been using the WSXGA+ for 2 months, I really dont know better. Everything looks normal. But when compared side-by-side with the UBV WXGA+ screen you really see how bright the screen is and how vibrant the colors are.
The tradeoff is 2x brightness for 25% less screenspace (WXGA+ vs WSXGA+).
I value screenspace more. After using the screen for a long period of time, you just dont know better from brightness until you put the WSXGA+ next to any other computer that is brighter.

The cheapest option is option #1, obviously.
Option #3 (Ultra BrightView) is like option #1, but much brighter. It uses 2 backlight lamps instead of one, yielding a brighter picture. The thing is, though, many people have reported that standard BrigtView is bright enough, and that Ultra BrightView is too bright. In fact, I remember a post where someone posted a picture of his dv9000 series PC that was taken outdoors with the machine running, and you could still clearly see the display. Aside from the glare, you could almost consider Ultra BrightView an "outdoor-viewable" display option. The other problem with Ultra BrightView is that because it uses dual backlight lamps, you would get less battery life than with the other 2 display options.
Option #2 (the WSXGA+ option) is what I would personallu go for, unless your eyesight is really poor. WSXGA+ gives you more screen space/area to work with.
Now, as far as the quality of the displays... that's going to be (almost) random. HP, like most notebook manufacturers, uses different suppliers for the same screen. And some of the suppliers are better than others. And no, you can't really control who will end up being the manufacturer of your screen. You're just going to have to hope for the best. -
Good info. Thanks.
You both get one fat slice of my best virtual chocolate cake!
