[Sorry about this being such a large first post. But I've been dealing with this for a long time now.]
Last November I bought a Compaq C712NR on Black Friday and since Day 1 it was having issues with solid freezing. I did driver updating and rolling back , Re-Installed Vista 3 times and tested the CPU, RAM and HDD for any types of issues(All Passed). Eventually I ran out of things to try and HP replaced my motherboard - Which didn't help anything. One day my notebook froze when trying to connect to my Wireless network, so I decided to remove the Broadcom (441090-001 AKA "Hoya") W-Lan card and everything ran fine. After an hour of having my calls conveniently disconnected and incorrectly routed, I finally got a fantastic case manager who understands my situation. He has heard about a conflict between some Broadcom W-LAN chips and the motherboards used exclusively in (some) Compaq notebooks. He even did some online research of his own about it. To confirm it wasn't just a bad W-LAN chip, I got sent an identical Broadcom chip which also caused freezing immediately. HP can't send me a different branded W-Lan chip so my case manager is trying to come up with a solution that doesn't involve HP sending me This.. I would imagine this issue is much larger then Google searches make it out to seem. Is anyone else having similar issues with Broadcom chips in Compaq Notebooks?

you might be able to buy your own wireless card and try it out (but it might require changing the list of cards in the BIOS which is dangerous)

HP changed the motherboard, Not me ;-). The HP tech support operators and even people from this forum said it was probably the motherboard since I tried everything else I could think of to find the cause. I personally thought it was a driver issue but I too was incorrect.
