All non-Centrino HP/Compaq come with Broadcom wireless. Broadcom has a propietary speed enhancement feature called Afterburner (a.k.a. 125HSM). I haven't had any luck, though, in getting faster speeds when using it with Broadcom-based wireless routers that support Afterburner. I made sure Afterburner was enabled in both the router and the HP laptop.

    Has anyone else fared better?

that technology is bogus. if you have an a/b/g card I'd suggest getting an a router and using that. Much more stable speeds and better throughput.
