While I was typing, the left arrow key loosened and then snapped off. I checked on the back of it, and the plastic that holds it down is completely broken, so there is no way I can possibly put it back on. I've only had my notebook for a week. What should I do?
Please help!

Call the manufacturer and get it in for warranty repair. It probably broke of before you bought it and they just glued it back on.

If it were me, I would call for a replacement since the computer is only a week old, there is no reason you should spend good money for sth defective. Besides, waiting for the repair takes about the same for a new one to arrive.
-
The worst part of getting a replacement system, is if the replacement has a different problem, like a dead pixel. The keyboard may be an End-User Replaceable part. If it is, HP will just send the KB to you for you to replace it yourself. Check with them and see if this is the case. Will save you from sending in your notebook or getting a replacement which will cause you to have no notebook for a while.

ok ok..
a broken keyboard is NOT covered by warranty
thats customer damage...sorry dude
my best suggestion is to call up and ***** and ask for a supervisor...
uh oh..a call...could it be you???
haha
I'd rather be skateboarding -
Well, the keyboard may not be covered under warranty in this situation if the unit was older than a week. Since you just got this unit, it could be categorized as a DOA part. Also, since this unit is within the 30 day return period, it'll be cheaper for them to just do the repair on the unit rather than give you your money back or swap it out with a new unit. I'm sure they'll do the replacement without you having to complain.
Replacing the KB is very simlpe on these units. A few screws and a ribbon cable is all that is required to be removed.

you were not listening to Sauriol,
a broken key on the keyboard is considered physical damage(customer damage) to the notebook
it is NOT covered under the our warranty
if you want us to repair it, it is $150
one of our lab computers is missing a key on the key board, if we want it fixed, we too either have to buy a new keyboard or pay $150 to have it sent in to be repaired
you can however try to repair it with crazy glue, it is usually not to hard -
whoa whose josh

Josh,
I was listening to Sauriol, but it also depends on the service center that you take it to. I've done repairs on notebooks with broken keys under warranty (depending on the situation). The service center you take it to/work in may not do the repairs, but others may. Since this notebook was just purchased 1 week ago, what do you think HP would prefer. The customer sending back the unit for a possible refund and the customer buying a different brand while HP pays for all the shipping, then have a notebook that can only be sold as a refurb, or just replace the keyboard and keep a customer happy? I vote for the latter. There is the possibility this may not happen, but cost wise, HP saves by doing the replacement.
-Vb- -
id have to agree, its a lot better for them to replace the keyboard for free. They could ship it out and talk you through it over the phone.

Are you absolutely certain the key has snapped? Almost all keyboards key caps are positioned on a pivotal piece of plastic which comes in two pieces that slot together, almost like a jigsaw puzzle would. Normal use of a keyboard should not result in such damage, but even if you were cleaning it I would expect only the key cap itseslf to come off without causing further damage, thus allowing you to re-fix the key cap on to its pivots. As to the previous responses to your post, well, I am of the opinion that ANY physical damage will not be covered by warranty. Hopefully, this is not the case.
-
As a customer service issue, HP will usually give in and repair or replace the keyboard free of charge if it is a week or two old, unless the damage is obviously end-user inflicted. I would have to agree with Venombite and take it to the service center.
-
Yes, it has completely snapped off. While I was typing, I felt it loosen, almost like a loose tooth. I pressed it a few more times and it popped off. I tried for about an hour to put it back on, but with no luck. Now, there's just a little rubber thing sticking out where the key was. I'm afraid to touch it for fear of damaging it any more than it already is.
-
just wanting to know what happend??
as for everyone who says we will replace it because its only a week old
too bad
it wont happen
try where you bought it from or Hp shopping because it wont be pushed through
customer damage..sorry dudes
I'd rather be skateboarding -
That's why I said to take it to a service center rather than contacting HP directly. Service centers repair at their own descretion, not all centers follow manufacturers strict guidelines. In any case, if the unit gets returned, the customer wins (which is what everyone wants), but HP loses money and possibly business, and I don't think that's what anyone wants. But if they do keep going this route, I guess it would explain why the Compaq Presario R3xxx series notebooks, that are based on the AMD CPU's, use the out dated NVidia 420/440 GPU's.
-Vb- -
Other service centers? I am not sure what you are referring to, do you mean Best Buy or Circuit City or Radio Shack service centers? If so, you will probably have good luck bringing the notebook back to the retailer to either get it exchanged or repaired. If you call HP tech support, we have to charge for the repair, we don't have any choice in the matter, sorry.

Josh,
I'm talking about Authorized Service Centers. Companies that repair computers on behalf of the manufacturers. I used to work for one and that's why I know that they exist & that the repairs can be done even though it may be "physical damage". I'm assuming all the users posting here from Chilliwack work for HP support, so your policy is to not repair any "physical damage" issues. Thay's why I said take it to an Authorized Service Center. If they look at it and say they'll fix it free, viola, it's done with, but if not, oh well. So it depends on the Authorized Service Center you go to and how bad the damage is. I would have fixed it under warranty if I was still working in that service center.
In your opinion, what do you think would be better for HP. Repairing an inexpensive keyboard under warranty (cost HP max $100), or take the unit back, send a new unit out and pay for shipping both ways? Plus, those returned notebooks can't be sold as new, only refurb and then there's the possibility you lose the customer completely. Based on HP's policy, I guess they don't care about losing money, and worse, losing customers.
-Vb- -
Wow, if the people working in these service centers are anything like Sauriol, i think i will be passing on the warranty and just pay out of my ass if something with the unit decides to go awry, it might be worth spending the money to save the aggrivation.
Also - if the computer is only a week old - you can simply just tell them the key was broken as recieved and there is no argument - $hit happens and hp knows this, they wont force a customer to keep a unit with broken parts that came from their warehouse.

do you know how to make just normal skate decks?? were gonna get banned from these forums haha spam to the max
so do you actually design parts or anything??
I'd rather be skateboarding -
No, regular skate decks are difficult because you need to bend the wood at both ends, and i just dont have the equipment to do that, you need a lot of water, steam machines, and really flexible wood.
i dont design computer parts, but i work for the government in fort momouth NJ in the radios department, we design and improve on radios used during combat
