    Greetings,

My son cracked my LCD screen in my new dt7-quad edition. First question is how easy of a repair is this? Is this something I could replace myself?

Secondly, if I can replace it myself, how do I go about getting thepart for it? I see in the product manual that there are two difference part numbers for the screen. The first seems to be in aluminum finish (656295-001) and the second one is in steel gray (656296-001). May be a stupid question but how do I know which one I should get? I got the black umber and not steel gray version so would I want the aluminum finish?

In any event, I can't seem to find the part anywhere anyways - not on Hp or any other search I've done on-line.

Lastly, if I can't do the repair - who would I get to do it???

Any ideas as to how much I am going to be looking at here?

    Thanks for any help!

I am assuming that you do not have or did not purchase an HP CarePack w/ADP?

Not sure why there would be two different screens (aside from the resolutions options offered for your model) seeings how the lid's bezel will cover the edges anyway. So I can't tell you specifically which part number to go with, however, I can tell you that it will be easy to find out. Disassemble the notebook as instructed within the service and maitenance manual for your model and inspect the tag on the screen. It will be a small white label that says "replace with HP spare". On either eBay or Amazon (my preference is eBay), simply search the product number (i.e. HP 656295-001). You will be surprised from there how easily and how many purchasing options you will encounter from the results. Expect to spend in the ballpark of $150.00USD or more, IMO.

My first notebook repair (and I am about as amateur as they come in PC repair) was an LCD screen on an HP Compaq Evo n1020v. It's kind of a delicate task but you can do it yourself in about an hour (speaking from a non-pro standpoint). Just take extreme care and all the time you need in seperating the screen bezel from the back. It is very easy to either scratch or crack as you are prying it apart. Use the right tools.

Should you not feel comfortable with the task, any local BestBuy can perform the repair according to HP standards. But the cost will be considerably more in doing so. Other repair options can be located in your locales YellowPages under "PC or Computer Repair" (assuming you are a U.S. resident).

Don't buy the part from HP. Take this opportunity to upgrade to a 1080p screen if you have not already.

See if you can find an AUO B173HW01 V4 or V5 to install, those are two of the best quality 17.3" 1920x1080 displays available (not including IPS)

I already had the 1080 p screen but can't for the life of me find a replacement anywhere. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but everywhere I look on line they don't have the High Def screen.

Is there any way I can search for compatible screens? I'll take a look for the two you mention above. Thanks!

Follow-up. Looks like the product numbers I found earlier were for the entire display assembly. I think I have found the product number for just the display panel (656297-001). I did a search and found a couple of places that sell an HP part for about $230. This seems a little high.

I guess this goes back to my previous question- is here any way to find an equivalent screen that I could use instead for a cheaper price? Don't really care if it is made by Hp or not.

    Thanks again!

You need to take apart the current display assembly and look for the actual manufacturer's part number on the LCD panel itself.

Usually when I do that, I only need to pry open the top part of the display, then I can peek behind the panel and see the number.
