    hello all,
Long story short, laptop tumbled down a flight of stairs and the screen cracked (Presario CQ60). I'm cheap and therefore it won't be getting fixed, and the laptop is now permanently tethered to an old CRT monitor. Is there a way to shut the lid without having the external display shut off?

You want to find the option that allows you to change the setting for what the OS will do when the laptop lid is shut.
Most likely it is currently set to the default option of sleep/standby. You'll want to set it to do nothing.
Just Google search your OS and laptop lid for more specific directions to find the menu. i.e "XP laptop lid"
