If you haven't purchased your zv6000 or the r4000, don't waste money on any additional mem. I just removed both 256 2700 RAM from my zv6005us and replaced it with one stick of 1Gig 3200 RAM. WOW! what a difference. It runs faster and smoother. I've seen a few posts saying you have to use 2700, NOT TRUE!!!!! Also for the dv4000 lovers out there that can't find the service and repair manual search the HP site for the zv6000 and you will find the manual, it is for both units. Also, it is extremely easy to remove the internal memory module if you have the manual, takes less than 10 minutes.

I did it that way at first with no noticeable gain in speed. I pulled both 256 sticks out and put a 1gig stick (3200/400) (Purchased locally no name brand) under the keyboard. and the speed gain is in fact noticable. Now the slot on the bottom is empty, so I guess I need to get another gig.

So you have the new 1 Gb stick, plus the other 256Mb stick in the keyboard slot?
I'm thinking about picking up an R4012US later today, and would like to upgrade the memory at some point. I was concerned that I would need to upgrade both sticks, if I can just add a 1gb stick that would probably be plenty for my needs.
They seem to be a popular model around here, all of the local best buys were sold out, but one nearby that just got 3 in last night.

My only concern is that two sticks of PC3200 might not work. Two sticks of Crucial PC3200 would be the safest bet if you go that route. Once HP switches over to the newer E-series CPUs this shouldn't be a problem at all. On the zv5000z's there were both success and failure reports.

I'm very surprised this makes a noticible difference. What the heck did HP do... maybe using a single stick is key, since HP broke dual channel memory support? That still doesn't make any sense...

The service guide is for the HP zv6000 and Compaq R4000, not the HP dv4000. I was able to find the dv4000 service guide easily enough (the usual Manuals link on the left-hand side of the relevant Support and Drivers page).

If 1 Gig creates a noticeable speedup over 512,
    consider instead reducing # of (memory-hungry, un-needed)
apps that start & run in XP -
    via a product like
    . . . xplite,
    http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html
    which is not only cheaper
    than extra silicon,
but doesn't run down the battery and create heat :)

I just called the Crucial tech suppot since the two 1 GB PC3200 stick did not work. It's strange that if I use either one of them then it works in either slot. However, when I put both in, it wouldn't even boot. The screen remained blank at all time and only fan was running.

At the end they are sending two PC2700 stick for exchange to see if it works. But I really hope there is way to fix the two PC3200 problem.

Just finished an HP chat session. They said they will only guarentee that 2700/333 mem will work with our laptops. I to can only get one stick of 3200/400 to work in my system. I put a second one in last night and the system crashed and continually rebooted until I removed it. I guess I will return one gig on Monday and leave one empty slot. If anyone can give me better info, i'd be greatful.

It's the 3200 thats the problem, you should be fine with two 2700's.

That is interesting, will 2 1 gig pc2700 memory sticks work or is the total memory limit limited to 1 1 gig any speed memory stick in any slot?

That is good to know, I should not need more than 1 gig, so I will put it in the primary memory slot.

I wonder if this problem is related to the issue of one memory channel be turned off?

I am thinking about trying the Mushkin memory, anyone tried the Mushkin memory yet in this laptop?

If you read about the AMD 64 at amd.com you will find it is only compatible with PC2700 and lower speeds.

Notebook SODIMMs, maybe, and even then only in 2 stick configurations. Desktops aren't able to handle four PC3200 DIMMs, you have to drop to PC2700 there... I wonder if each double-sided SODIMM counts as two DIMMs? Just about every stick above 256MB is double-sided. Strange, because other AMD64 notebook builders offer PC3200. Anyhow, the new E-revision cores are supposed to allow 4 PC3200 DIMMs on the desktop, so I bet they'll allow two PC3200 sticks on notebooks. HP will have to switch over sooner or later as the older 130nm chips run out.

People are running insanely overclocked memory on the desktop in 2 DIMM configurations.
