I was at Best Buy the other day and had a HP custom built.
ZT3000, 1.7Ghz, 512x1, 60GB@5400, DVD+RW, 64MB ATI 9200, XP Home, WSXGA
At Best Buy, it costs $1964.
When I went to HP online, the computer costs $1774.
Both HP and BB are offering $50 off right now.
Is it worth it to get the 3 yr warranty ($250) from BB and have my computer fixed locally, or from HP for $300?
So basically I save $150 by going direct with HP.
Best Buy didn't know how to answer this, and they state usually their computers are similarly priced if not cheaper. [?] I might have to go back to Best Buy to further investigate this.

Mjj,
Forget about Best Buy, get the unit directly from HP. You get the exact same config for cheaper.
Also, DO NOT buy Best Buy's extended warranty plan. Repairs that have to be done, must be done in store, but the HP warranty, for an extra $50, will allow you to get repairs done at any HP Authorized service center worldwide.
SO, I say, cancel your order with BB & go to HP directly for everything. It's better in every aspect, cost & service.

VB, errrr (buzzer sound), you're wrong about the bestbuy warranty.
i work at one, so ill give you a run through of why it's better than HPs (or any competitors) for that matter.
1) the repairs can actually be done at any certified HP (in this case) dealer IF there is no bestbuy available. if there is, you have to go through bestbuy. but with nearly 700 stores, the odds are you'll find one.
2) it's international. we run through AIG warranties, which is an international corp. so if your laptop dies on you oversees while you're at the Olympic games, you can get it fixed/replaced (replaced if it's a DEVO - aka junk out - item). right there.
3) battery replacements. i dont believe HP or any manufacturer covers that. i might be wrong, but as far as i know that's the case. basically we all know that LI-ion batteries die in a year - year and a half, so you can get free batteries through bestbuy from that. call 1888BESTBUY and they ship it to your house (come in the store the first time though).
4) there is a NO LIMIT policy. you can do 1 repair or 200 repairs. whatever it takes to get your laptop running. HP, on the other hand, is limitted to one on each major parts (monitor etc)
5) the NO LEMON policy is also there, and it means that if we have to do three repairs, at that point we give you a new unit instead if sending it in for service.
6) coverage due to dust, heat, humidity or power failure!
there are some more but i can't think straight right now..
but hope that helps. so yes, in my opinion, go with bestbuy's. i was in the same situation as you actually, and was thinking of going with HP's (beacuse i ordered through them), however i read through their warranty and wasn't really impressed. plus my managers let me get the BBY warranty anyways, at a 30% discount too :-d.

Also, if you order through Hpshopping.com You won't have to pay SALES TAX! That is a good deal!
Another thing, you should be able to get a $100 rebate instead of the $50 rebate.

Well I went to Best Buy today and happened to run into the store manager.
When I told him about the price difference, he looked it up and then said, "Let me do some calculations."
After agreeing with the $200 difference, he said he'd beat HP's price and knock $250 off the Best Buy custom built price. [] Then, he said if I join Best Buy's reward zone that I would get an additional $100 in rebates. I also got the HP $50 mail-in rebate.
This was too good to not take. We'll see what happens.
I will soon be the proud owner of an HP zt3000 after owning a Dell Inspiron 7500 for 4 years. -
