I am going with the i7 2860 processor, 1080p screen, and 300 sdd since i dont have a clue how to add these on my own to save money.

My question is about the ram. I want to get 12gb since i use a lot of photoshop, autocad, and revit. I am not sure if i should get 8gb or 12gb. Will 1600mhz make a difference over the 1333mhz? I also have a dead hp envy 14 bought a year ago that has 8gb ram. Would i be able to use the same ram for my new envy and save money? or are the ones from last year different models or something.

Your ram from your old envy 14 should work, but I think it will be slower speed ram.

I would just get whatever ram you feel you need, though 12gb of ram is massive, but then I've never really done much with revit or photoshop. I have done virtual machines and cad and haven't had an issue with 8 in my desktop.

Also if you are getting that processor and an ssd, might as well get the faster ram because it would probably make a bigger difference than with a hdd and one of the slower processors...

Unless you are working with truly massive files, or perhaps some kind of VMWare, etc., there is not going to be much benefit in 16GB vs. 8GB. The only time I ever go above a few GB in memory usage is when working with enormous outdoor advertising images in Photoshop that are themselves several GB in size, or sometimes when rendering motion graphics on large 1080p video files. (Not sure about AutoCAD and revit)

As for 1600MHz vs 1333MHz, that would provide even less noticeable benefit than 16GB vs 8GB. The amount of memory has more impact.

As for tips for customizing your new laptop, I recommend enabling Momentum Glide and Tap Zones on the synaptics settings, and setting up a top right corner tap zone that will be equivalent to right-clicking the mouse.

Here is how to enable tap zones in the Synaptics settings:

    1. Open regedit.exe

    2. Navigate to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Synaptics \ SynTPCpl \ Controls \ 7Tapping \ Tap Zones’

    3. Delete the key ‘Visibility’

As soon as you open the Synaptics Pointing Device Properties / Device Settings menu again, Tap Zones are now visible.
