I took my laptop on a roadtrip with a DC to AC adaptor similar to the ones seen here... http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/power-inverters.html. I don't know the exact wattage but it looks like the numbers 45-901 to 45-905.

However, when I plug my laptop into this box, the box on my power cord makes a strange buzzing sound that scares me a little bit. Is there anything to worry about? Is there a better way to plug my laptop in in the car?

The power output from most DC to AC adapters is a simulated/step sine wave (rather than a true sine wave that you'd get from a wall outlet), and tends to cause that buzzing noise you describe. If you have a consumer-level UPS battery backup at home and let the battery kick in, you'd probably hear the same noise from your laptop AC adapter.

The noise is disconcerting, but switching power supplies (like your laptop AC adapter) are supposed to be able to handle it.
