OK, every since I did the Core Duo hotfix, you know the one in this thread, my CD/DVD drive randomly spins up or sometimes even pops open for no apparent reason. This only happens when there's a disc in the drive (Edit: recently I noticed it randomly attempts to read while empty), and it only started happening after I applied the hotfixes (in fact, my drive just spun again while I was typing this sentence  ). This is driving me nuts! Anyone know why or how this happened and how to fix it? My lappy is the dv2000t, and my CD/DVD drive is the LightScribe LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4084N.

Update: OK, now my drive quit working right in the middle of a DVD burn. It's ripping speed crawled to a much slower rate, and then during the burn the buffer was all over the place and it just quit after 2% into the burn. What's up?

Yes. I've burned many images so I'm sure it's a LightScribe.

Thanks for the link. I noticed that my drive was running in PIO mode so I uninstalled the IDE driver and rebooted and it went back DMA. However, tonight when I checked it was back in PIO so something is causing it revert to PIO, and I'm not sure what. I'll read the info on the provided link to see if I can resolve the issue. Thanks again.

For me it works already for 2nd day in Multi-word DMA 2 mode, no problems so far, after applying that patch,

Btw LighScribe means that you can print (cut with laser) the images on it? so have you tried it?

LightScribe allows to print images on the other side of special media types. The technology works as follows - cuts the special surface of special media type with laser until the necessary image apperas. For that you need LightScribe hardware + LightScribe software + LightScribe media.

As far as i understood that LG GSA-4084 doesn't support LightScribe, at least it isnt written anywhere.

I never heard of that hotfix before now. I just performed it and the annoying iTunes skipping phenomenon seems to be fixed. I'm curious if it will continue to work, but that's been a big issue with the dual cores and iTunes 7. I have noticed any CD drive problems yet, but I haven't done much burning on this computer yet. My old dv2000 had the sony non-lightscribe drive and after the first couple burns reverted to PIO. I found a good registry fix online that removes the check error counter so that you can stay in DMA after resetting the controller.

Not sure who your sources are but they are wrong. My drive is in fact a LightScribe drive and I've created a boatload of discs already so need to further speculate whether or not this drive model is a LightScribe drive or not.

Now, back on subject. The drive is still behaving erractly ever since applying the Core Duo hotfix in the link I provided above. The .vbs patch provided in the thread by nikotins did throw my drive back in to Multi-word DMA 2 mode, but for some stupid reason it is still randomly spinning, even when the drive is empty. It spins when I close my lid, open my lid, bump it, take it off my lap and put it on a table, unplug the power cord, and randomly during games (despite not ever happening before when playing that game). Also, the drive will randomly pop open without me even touching the release button. What the hell?

So, forget LightScribe and DMA for a minute. Anyone else experiencing this type of erratic behavior as a result of that hotfix? The one thing I haven't tested yet is to reverse the hotfix (i.e. unstill the MS hotfix, clear out /usepmtimer from the boot.ini file, and delete the regedit) to see if that cures my DVD drive. I don't necessarily want to do that yet if something else might be causing this to happen. Could be that the drive is failing for some reason, but again, this didn't start happening until I started reading this dang forum and applying the dang MS Hotfixes.

If applying that hotfix was the cause of your problems with the optical drive, then logic would suggest that everyone who applies it would have similar problems. It seems like you are an isolated incident, which suggests that either: 1) your installation of the hotfix is corrupt or 2) your hardware has problems. My guess would be #2. It is simple enough to uninstall the hot fix and the registry and boot.ini changes you made, why not try reverting and see if it helps your problem. It would certainly eliminate that as a suspect.

I'm having the EXACT same problem with my dv8000t series with the same lightscribe cd/dvd drive, and i haven't completed the hotfix. (the ms update patch seems to be installed in my system, tho i don't remember doing it specially.) I mean exact - can't move the computer without the drive spinning, etc. And in the past couple days I've started getting system halts, due - I think - to hardware interrupts. I don't know for sure that this is related, but on at least a couple of occasions I've noticed that my system will come out of its slowdown (or halt) after a series of nasty "no disc inserted" noises from the burner.

Naturally I've just passed the 14-day window to take it back to CompUSA...

I'm searching all over the net - if I find out anything I'll post it here.

Basically it's a program which allows you to burn an image/label on the top of a cdr. It was actually an option on my notebook, I passed however.

ender22 - I'm not sure how brave you are, but you can try what I did in this thread to see if it resolves your problem.

    Hi,

I found this thread via google. Am having the exact same issue with my hp dv8233cl. Has anyone found a solution to the drive? I'm wondering if I should take it in and get it looked it.
